Boys Soccer Informational Meeting

There will be an informational meeting for all players and parents who are interested in participating in the Men’s Soccer Program here at Wyoming on Friday, April 29th. This meeting will be for all players who will be Incoming Freshman this Fall through Seniors.

The meeting will take place in the High School Cafeteria and will last from 7 pm until 8 pm.

Volleyball
Player of the year:Haley Stewart: The second-team all-state middle blocker/right-side hitter led the Cincinnati Hills League with 301 kills and added 157 digs. She was a first-team all-district selection and was named the CHL athlete of the year.

First team
Maddie Bahr: The libero was third in the CHL with 401 digs and a first-team all-district selection.

Mia Kraft: The honorable mention all-state setter led the CHL with 785 assists with a robust 10.47 per-game average and added 239 digs. Kraft was also a first-team all-district selection.

Lydia Kurtz: The second-team all-district outside hitter was 12th in the CHL with 119 kills and added 109 digs despite missing the first eight matches.

Reagan Raymer: The second-team all-district right-side/outside hitter was fourth in the CHL with 223 kills and ninth in the league with 271 digs.

Tri-County Press All Stars
Haley Stewart: The 6-foot-2 middle blocker/right-side hitter was a CHL leader with 301 kills, 100 blocks and 157 digs. Stewart made CHL first team for league champion Cowboys.

Maddie Bahr: Libero made CHL first team and had 401 digs for the CHL champs.

Mia Kraft: The Cowboys setter was CHL first team. She had 70 kills, 785 assists and 239 digs for the league champions.

Football
OL: Eric Perry: The senior was second-team all-district.

LB: Tucker Berger: The senior was second-team all-district. He had 127 tackles in the regular season.

DB: Mason Rogers: The senior was special mention all-state and first-team all-district. He had 30 solo tackles, 11 assisted tackles, seven tackles for loss, two interceptions and three pass breakups in the regular season.

Justin Shields, Jake Edmonds, Jamal Fox.

Tri-County Press All Stars
Tucker Berger: Linebacker was second in the Cincinnati Hills League in tackles with 127 in the regular season. Berger added 15 more tackles in the Cowboys’ playoff game. He also had a sack and two fumble recoveries and was first-team All-Cincinnati Hills League.

Jake Edmonds: Edmonds was sixth in the CHL in receiving yard with 28 catches for 378 yards and nine touchdowns. He also ran for 92 yards and a score, had 23 defensive tackles and averaged 11.8 yards on punt returns and 15 yards on kickoff returns. Edmonds was first-team All-CHL.

Eric Perry: The 6-foot-3 265 pound two-way lineman was first-team All-CHL, leading the offensive line and adding a pair of tackles on defense.

Mason Rogers: The receiver/defensive back was first-team All-CHL. He had 13 receptions for 251 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 222 yards and two scores. Defensively, he had 46 tackles and two interceptions. He also averaged 26.6 yards on kickoff returns.

Justin Shields: Shields was the second-leading rusher in the CHL with 1,343 yards and 20 touchdowns. Out of the backfield he had eight catches for 139 yards and a score. Shields made CHL first team.

Whitley Elsass: The junior came in 25th at the regional meet with a time of 19:57.5.

Riley Bahr, Danielle McKee, Lily Parker

Tri-County Press All Stars
Whitley Elsass: Elsass was the CHL Runner of the Year and had the second best time in the league with a 19:46.70 at the CHL meet. Wyoming was sixth at the Division II regional meet at Troy with Elsass finishing 25th in 19:57.5.

Danielle McKee: McKee was CHL first team and had the third best time in the league with a 20:11.50 at the CHL meet. McKee finished 39th at the Division II regional meet in 20:31.3.

Cullen O'Brien: The senior placed 44th at the regional meet with a time of 17:08.6.

Tri-County Press All Stars
Cullen O’Brien: O’Brien had the fourth best time in the league with a 16:45.40 at the CHL Championship to make CHL first team. O’Brien was 44th at the Division II regional meet at Troy in 17:08.6.

Lucy Walton: Qualified for the Division II district tournament at PipeStone.

Second Team
Kayla Wilson: Qualified for the Division II district tournament at PipeStone.

Elizabeth Fischer: Qualified for the Division II district tournament at PipeStone.

Cooper Hausfeld: Hausfeld had the top average in the CHL with a 39.43 to be named CHL Golfer of the Year and first team.

Kayla Hampton: was second-team all-state and first-team all-CHL. She had 12 goals and three assists.

Second Team
Casey Jervier: was first-team all-CHL with 16 goals and two assists.

Tri-County Press All Stars
Kayla Hampton: Hampton was seventh in the CHL in scoring with 12 goals and three assists to make CHL first team.

Casey Jervier: Midfielder was Wyoming’s top scorer with 16 goals and two assists. Jervier made CHL first team.

First Team
Andrew Derge: A second team all-Ohio selection and first team all-CHL pick. He led the CHL with 23 goals.
Jay Klein: Named second team all-Ohio and first team all-CHL alongside Derge. Klein led the CHL in points (69) by scoring 21 goals with 27 assists; the latter ranked second in the city.

Second Team
Ethan Wayman: The goalkeeper had 9.5 shutouts and was selected first team all-CHL.

Tri-County Press All Stars
Andrew Derge: Forward/midfielder was second in the CHL in scoring with 52 points on 23 goals and six assists. Derge was CHL first team.

Jay Klein: Forward/midfielder was the top scorer in the CHL with 21 goals and 27 assists to make CHL first team.

Tristan Kovach: Midfielder was ninth in the CHL in scoring with 11 goals and nine assists to make CHL first team.


Ethan Wayman: Goalkeeper had 77 saves and nine shutouts for the Cowboys to make CHL first team.

A Look Back to the Fall

Before we move into 2017, a few items from the Fall 2016 sports have crossed our desk that a worth a quick look back.

Did you hear that Jay Klein was awarded the The Senior Excellence Award from The National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

The criteria that Jay had to meet in order to be considered for this award is as follows:

Be a high school senior

Have made significant contributions to the team

Represent the finest attributes of a team player

Consistently projects a positive attitude

Displays team leadership

Exemplifies the standards set forth in the NSCAA Player Code of Conduct and Ethics

Congratulations, Boys.

A letter from an old coach:

Congratulations to the Wyoming Boys Soccer team for achieving back-to-back District Championships.  This was no surprise to me, an old coach that has seen these kids playing together since 2nd grade. Along with Coach Varland, we formed a team back in 2006 and I am proud of their commitment to work on their unique strengths with each new season.  Most of them continued playing soccer with the roster changing here and there thru the years.  The bulk of the Varsity team is graduating this year, and it has been a pleasure seeing them develop their soccer skills, love for the game, and turn into a championship team.  I wish them the best of luck as they embark on their college years.

Fab Four

From Coach Thomas

Jay Klein, Andrew Derge, Ethan Wayman and Tristan Kovach have been selected by the coaches in Southwest Ohio to the All-Southwest Ohio Team.

This is an very prestigious honor and one that all four players have worked hard to achieve.

As one of the top 12 Senior’s selected, Jay Klein will be playing in the Senior All-Southwest Ohio All-Star Game this Sunday, November 15th. The All-Star game will be played at the Sycamore High School located at 7400 Cornell Rd, Montgomery, OH.

The girl’s All-Star Team and the Boy’s All-Star Team will both be playing and honored on November 15th.

The schedule for the All-Star Games are as follows:

1. The girls game kicks off at 2:30 pm.
2. The  Awards Ceremony will begin at approximately 3:45 pm honoring every All-Southwest Ohio player.
3. The boys game will begin around 4:30 pm.

Admission to the game is $ 5.00/person with children under 10 admitted for free. All all-star game players and All SW Ohio Honorees will be admitted for free.  Game programs will be $1 each.

What a Run

The Boys Soccer team's record breaking season came to an exciting end on Saturday, November 7th, when they fell 1-2 to Dayton Carroll.  Check out Scott Springer's article at Cincinnati.com HERE

The Big Show

Paul Kovach filed this report from the ultra-dramatic, double overtime, sudden death, Regional Semi-Final on Wednesday, November 4th.

It was a cold but clear November evening, no wait that was last year. The evening was unusually warm for a November evening, not a sleeping bag in sight. After the rain and cold of the McNick game where yellow cards were abundant, to Springfield Kenton ridge in Hamilton to a regional semi final game at Wright State. District finals two years in a row and another shot to go further had the Cowboys team and parents amped up. A nicely timed flyover by a C-4 from Wright Pat set the stage for the game. The Bishop Hartley Team was from Columbus. Our Wyoming scouts reported two all star players on the Bishop team. In response the Wyoming Cowboys brought their team.

The first 20 minutes saw the Cowboys taking shots at the goalie that could not quite find the back of the net. Momentum started to shift and a long shot from the opponents found a hole and scored. An unfortunate injury sent Marshall to the side lines.

The temperature on the field and in the stands heated up as the teams sweated it out and the fans became excited, agitated and louder. A late goal in the second half tied the game, the game was tied, TIED. The stands went crazy. The last 5 minutes had both teams holding on.

Two fifteen minutes over-time, sudden death, then to penalty kicks if needed. The first 15 saw opportunities on both sides, with no conclusion. A SECOND overtime. Fans were getting up the adrenaline was flowing, cries of leave it on the field were loud and long as legs wore out.
Thank the gods that a cross by the Cowboys in the last part of the second overtime found the back of the net. (Final 2-1 Wyoming)

It was pandemonium among the stands and players. High fives all around. The winning war cry “I can’t feel my legs.” “ You see them boys, right there, they piped up.”

What a great game for the team, coaches, parents and all the fans that came to a great soccer game.. Congratulations and on to the next.

The team plays next in the Regional Finals on Saturday, November 7th at 12pm at Monroe High School vs. Dayton Carroll.  The winner of this game advances to the State Semi-Finals.  Tickets are $7.

Super Sized Saturday

Our boys’ soccer team plays in the regional finals on Saturday (November 7th) at 12pm at Monroe High School vs. Dayton Carroll.  The winner of this game advances to the state semi finals.  Tickets are $7.

Football travels to Indian Hill on Saturday night (November 7th) for a 7pm game in the first round of the state playoffs.  We have about 250 presale tickets remaining at Wyoming.  All presale tickets are $8.  After we sell out anyone who wants a presale ticket will have to purchase from Indian Hill until 3pm on Friday.  If any tickets remain, they are $9 at the door.  Please plan on arriving at Indian Hill early as parking will be at a premium.

How They Got to Now and Where to Go Tonight

Before taking the District title by knocking off Kenton Ridge on October 31st, they wiped up McNick 2-0 on October 27th in the Sectional Finals.

They now play in the Regional Semi Final (top 16 teams in the state) TONIGHT against Columbus Bishop Hartley at Wright State University at 7pm.  All tickets are $7.   Directions can be found HERE.

We Were Treated to Great Seasons, And It's Not Over Yet

Like the best Halloween dark chocolate, AD Jan Wilking has some bittersweet news to share.

Congratulations to our girls’ soccer and girls’ volleyball teams who finished their seasons this past week at District Runner-Ups.  Both programs had tremendous seasons and should be very proud to once again be in the top 32 programs in the state of Ohio.

Congratulations to our girls’ cross country team who finished 6th in regionals on Saturday in Troy.

She also has the some make-your-teeth-hurt super-sweet news to share.

Boys’ soccer continues their quest for a trip to the state finals, winning on Saturday night 4-0 over Kenton Ridge.  We play on Wednesday night at 7pm at Wright State University in the regional semi final game (top 16 teams in the state) vs. Columbus Bishop Hartley.  All tickets are $7.

Football earned a third consecutive trip the state playoffs.  We take on Indian Hill on SATURDAY night at 7pm at Indian Hill.  Tickets will go on sale at school in the athletic office on Wednesday at lunch.  All tickets are $8.  GET YOUR TICKETS EARLY as we will only be given a portion of the total tickets available.  No passes are accepted for this state playoff game.  Parking will be an issue at the game on Saturday so plan to arrive early to Indian Hill.  Additional parking will be available on Drake Road and at Indian Hill Elementary School.  Carpooling is encouraged.  There will be a student spirit bus leaving Wyoming at 5:45pm on Saturday.  Tickets for the bus are $2 and MUST BE BOUGHT IN ADVANCE at lunch starting Wednesday.  Follow @WyomingSports on Twitter for more ticket updates and information as it becomes available.

Just Leave the Candy On the Porch

Tuesday. October 27th, in a match almost noted for class-act sportsmanship on both sides of the ball, the Boys Soccer team wiped out McNick 2-0 in the Sectional Finals and advance to play Kenton Ridge for the District Title on Saturday, October 31st at 7pm.  Although the game will be on Halloween, let's hope it's less disturbing than Tuesday's game.  The game will be held at Hamilton High School in Hamilton, OH.

Word on the street is that Rod Apfelbeck was on-hand to capture action so look forward to seeing some great pictures.

Several Wyoming teams are still alive in post season play.  Here is update of events this week:

Girls Soccer:  Monday 7pm at Kings High School vs. McNick.  Sectional finals (top 64 teams in Ohio).  All tickets $6.  Winner plays on Thursday (10/29) at 7pm at Dayton Wayne High School for District Finals.

Boys Soccer:  Tuesday 7pm at Milford High School vs. McNick.  Sectional final.  All tickets $6.  Winner plays.  Winner plays Saturday (10/31) site and time TBA.

Girls Volleyball:  Saturday 6pm at Trent Arena (Kettering Fairmont High School) in District Finals (top 32 teams in Ohio) vs. the winner of Shawnee/Tipp City.

Cross Country:  Saturday Girls at 11:45 and Boys at 2:15 at Troy, OH Hobart Arena.  Wyoming girls won the District race on Saturday lead by Whitley Elsass and followed by Danielle McKee, Riley Bahr, Lily Parker and Emily Wood.  Cullen O’Brien qualified for regionals on the boys side.

Football:  We host Deer Park on Friday night at 7pm.  It is senior parent night for all our fall student athletes and band members.  A victory on Friday would give the Cowboys a good chance to earn a second consecutive playoff berth.  We would travel to another area high school for a first round game on Saturday, November 7th at 7pm.  Playoff information will be available next week.

JV Boys Soccer Update

Tracy Payne gets us caught up with the Boys JV Soccer team

9/21 - Wyoming Boys JV Soccer vs CHCA
Sophomore keeper, Cole Engel had an incrediable first half with many saves. Luckily, 20 of the shots from CHCA were not on target, unless you were playing American Football, FIELD GOAL! First half ended, 0-0.

A few shots for Wyoming, more possession the 2nd half, looked better. Defense did a great job, sophomores, Christian Robles, Nicholas Denson, and Declan Dunehew worked hard. We had a last chance effort by freshman, Jonathan Klein sent in a blazing cross from the left side to sophomore, Trevor Payne who fired it on target!
Unfortunately, the quick CHCA keeper was able to deflect it over the crossbar. The final was an exciting 0-0 draw!

9/24 - Wyomings Boys JV Soccer vs Lebanon
Early first half, sophomore keeper, Cole Engel had a nice save. Lebanon had a tall, fast striker who drove the ball to goal five times the first half. First half ended 0-5 Lebanon.

Second half, the Lebanon striker was benched and it was game on! Lebanon had two yellow cards the 2nd half, a penalty kick was given in the box. Penalty taken by Wyoming freshman, Sam McCulumsmith and scored! Lebanon scored twice more for a final score of 1-7 Lebanon. It was a tough match up with a highly ranked team.

10/6 - Wyoming Boys JV Soccer vs Reading
To start the Cowboys off early, sophomore, Brett Reichwein assisted junior, Kendall Eyman with a goal. Sophomore, Brett Reichwein ran in for a rebound and drove a shot pass the Reading keeper for a 2nd goal. Not too long after that... Brett Reichwein got a 3rd goal for a hat-trick! 3-0 at half.
Off to a great start,  2nd half, Brett Reichwein crosses to freshman, Evan Morley for a goal.
Freshman, Will Wolf took a shot and scored! Before the end of the game, Reading scored for a final Wyoming Cowboys 5-1 over Reading.

Score Early, Score Often

Alex Syfris and Jay Klein get us to date with the Boys Varsity Soccer team.

We’re coming to you with plenty of news from the Wyoming Cowboys. The Cowboys came up with a huge victory against a top 5 D1 Lebanon team (Thursday, September 24th). Wyoming was a definite underdog going in, but this could not be seen in the Cowboy’s play and mentality as they dominated the Lebanon side. In the opening minutes of the game, play opened up with a nice through ball by Christopher Rutter creating a 1 on 1 situation with Jay Klein and the Lebanon goalkeeper who stood no chance.  Jay Klein followed up the first goal minutes later with a nice shot slotted right by the keeper. Lebanon put Wyoming goalie Ethan Wayman under constant pressure in the first half but could not find the back of the net. The high pressure defense coupled with quality saves by Ethan Wayman held off the Lebanon attackers. The Cowboys entered the second half with high spirits and continued to control play, putting away Lebanon with a third and final goal by Tristan Kovach.

The next week had coach Steve Thomas in violent mood swings as the Cowboys took on Finneytown (Tuesday, September 29th) and then Seven Hills (Wednesday, September 30th). The Cowboys put away Finneytown with relative ease with goals from Jay Klein (2), Tristan Kovach (1), and a hat trick by Andrew Derge (3). Finneytown roasted Wyoming’s goalkeeper with a dirty chip from around 40 yards out, taking advantage of the goalkeepers inability to jump due to an injured back. The game ended 6-1 Cowboys. Seven Hills proved a much more trying game for our boys. The Cowboys left the game defeated 2-0 after playing a tough game against a well-coached squad.

Senior Night! The 11 seniors on the Wyoming team all started against Reading in the CHL match (Tuesday, October 6th). Emotions ran high as this was likely the last time the Wyoming seniors would play on their home field with many of the same people who had been together since peewee soccer. The goals started pouring in from the seniors with a goal each from Jay Klein, Nicholas Robles, Tristan Kovach, Nathan Gressel, and Charlie Oliver. A nice, long halftime ceremony honored the seniors and their parents adding to the night’s sentiment. A goal was also scored by junior Andrew Derge off a beautiful assist from fair haired senior Marshall Hayes concluding the match 6-0.

Catching Up With the Cowboys

Alex Syfris and Jay Klein updated us with all the recent Boys Varsity Soccer action.

Unfortunately the tough defeat last Tuesday (September 15th) against the current Cincinnati Hills League leader, Mariemont, was not just one of Steve Thomas' nightmares. Mariemont took an early lead from a ricochet off the post and then off a Wyoming player. The Cowboys struck back minutes later but would never take the lead, fighting tireless all 80 minutes. The game ended 3-2 in favor of Mariemont.

The Cowboys bounced back on Thursday (September 17th) with a close win against Madeira. The game opened up with a goal from Andrew Derge, his 7th of the season putting Wyoming in a good spot early on. Their lead vanished in the 2nd half when Madeira midfielder Graham Long finished a great play for the Mustangs. Tristan Kovach answered back with a flick of the head netting a well worked play from Jay Klein and Andrew Derge. The Cowboys dominated possession to hold the game to its 2-1 scoreline.

Saturday the 19th went as expected with Wyoming pulling away and routing Talawanda 5 to 1. Although it took 20 minutes for the first goal, Jay Klein’s put away unleashed a flurry of Wyoming goals from the golden forehead of Andrew Derge (2 goals), Tristan Kovach and one more from Jay to give the Cowboys the wide margin of 5 goals. Talawanda did little to concern the effective Wyoming team, however Craig Bond, son of James, caught the Cowboy defense on its heels and put one in for the Talawandians.

Colerain Out Cold

Alex Syfris and Jay Klein report from the Boys Varsity Soccer win over Colerain on Saturday, September 12th.

Coach Steve Thomas can sleep well tonight as the Cowboys continue their streak of blowout victories. After losing last year to Colerain in a close match the Cowboys came back with a vengeance. The match began with many offensive opportunities from both sides, and proved to be an impressive exhibition of goalkeeping from both Ethan Wayman and Jared Leyland. His Neuer-esque goalkeeping, functioning as a sweeper (last defender), kept the Cowboys from running up ther score as he stopped many potential breakaways. Wyoming was the first to convert with a stellar play from Jay Klein to Nicholas Robles. This bit of brilliance was the first goal of the season for James Rodriguez (Nicholas Robles) and an excellent start to the home game. Andrew Derge followed up minutes later with nice goal off of a throw in from Ivan Meisner to finish the half at a strong 2-0 Cowboy lead. The lead was further extended when Jay Klein tipped a pass just out of reach of the Colerain goalkeeper to the foot of Nathan Gressel to make it 3-0. Colerain answered with a cheeky chip from Cody Busam, who had an excellent game, constantly putting pressure on the Cowboys defense. The fourth and final goal of game came from a volley from Jay Klein off Thor's (Tristan Kovach) cross. The game ended 4-1 with the Cowboys holding a comfortable lead throughout the game.
