Post Season Softball

Lisa Golden filed the following report for the Softball team.

The 2016 Wyoming Cowboy Softball team continued their impressive season last night winning their first postseason game in 7 years.  Peaking at the right time, the Cowboys played their best game yet.  With a bit of fortune, the game was originally to be played at Blanchester, but was moved to Wyoming’s playable field.
In the top of the first, Senior Ally Golden walked after working a 3-2 count.  Reily Boss then singled to center, and Reagan Raymer followed with another walk to load the bases.  The Blanchester pitcher then settled down to strike out two before giving up a walk to Senior Madeline Juergens to score Ally.  That was all the Cowboys got offensively for a while.  The Blanchester girls managed a double and single in the bottom of the first to tie the score at 1-1 after one inning.
A great pitcher’s duel ensued, coupled with very sound defense on both sides resulting in the 1-1 game entering the seventh inning.  Madeline faced 16 batters in the last 3 innings (Blanchester got 2 hits in each of those innings), but stayed in control and worked her way out of several jams.
At the plate, Madeline lead off with a walk, went to second on the Blanchester pitcher’s only wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground-out by Shelby Fritz, and scored on Michaela Fetter’s single for a 2-1 lead going to the bottom of the seventh.  Blanchester then hit a single, double, and an out later had Blanchester’s leading hitter coming to the plate with runners on second and third (the tying and winning runs).  A bold move to walk the next batter left Madeline with little room for error.  As she did all game, Madeline pitched out of a jam with back to back grounders to Reagan Raymer for the force at home and then to first to end the game.  Cowboys WIN!!!

Despite a valiant effort, the team fell to Goshen in the second round.

Softball Spoilers

Wyoming softball finished the regular season with a non-conference game against Princeton, and their final conference game against the CHL winner, Reading.  At Princeton, Wyoming took an 8-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, and walked away with an 8-6 victory.

The Cowboys saved their best game for last.  They played the season finale against the CHL undefeated leader, Reading on their Senior night.  However, it was our Wyoming seniors that shined.  Senior lead-off hitter Allison Golden had 2 hits, scored 2 runs, and had 2 RBIs in the first two innings.  That was more than enough for senior Madeline Juergens, who faced only six more batters than the minimum (for the whole game!); and after the first inning, didn’t face more than four batters in any one frame.  In fact, the high powered Reading offense managed just one hit and two walks from the second inning on.

Junior Reagan Raymer hit a milestone with her 100th career hit for Wyoming (she was 2 for 4 at the plate with 2 triples and an RBI).    Skyler Wolski was cleared from a possible concussion, and did a wonderful job behind the plate.  After falling behind 2-1 in the first, the second inning proved decisive.  Madeline singled and scored the tying run on a hard it ball by Emma Jacquemin; Shelby Fritz (reached on an error) and Michaela Fetter singled and then scored on a single by Ally.  With 2 outs, Sammi Campbell completed the scoring for the Cowboys with a single that scored Golden and Reilly Boss.  The Reading pitcher then faced only four batters above the minimum from the third inning on.  This was a great pitcher’s duel with excellent play in the field. The defense was spot on.  Boss and Shelby Fritz each had two of the last six outs; and each had to make running catches in the outfield.  Raymer had a 5-5-3 double play to end the first inning, and Ally caught two and had three assists at shortstop.  On one of those grounders, she held a runner at third while making the play to first.  That runner never did score, and the 6-2 lead held for the rest of the game.

Next up for the Cowboys is the post-season tournament; the 7th seeded Cowboys have to travel to Blanchester, the #6 seed on Tuesday.

Softball Sees Success

The Cowboy Softball team went 3-2 in their last five league games.  On the 25th, the Cowboys scored a 7-4 victory at Finneytown behind a two-hitter by Madeline Juergens and a 2-run homerun by Skylar Wolski.  Michaela Fetter took over first base for a missing Emma Jacquemin, and recorded 8 put-outs.

In the second game, the Cowboys hosted Reading.  They jumped out to an early 6-1 lead thanks to a homerun by Sammy Campbell in the second inning.  The Reading offense took advantage of the second game without Emma as the Cowboys felt the strain of being in unfamiliar positions, and the Cowboys found themselves in their only blowout loss of the season.

The Cowboys rebounded in admirable fashion as they took on Deer Park.  Emma Melvin saw her first action of the season in the field, after returning from an injury.  They spotted Deer Park a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the fifth; and after a shaky start, the return of Emma Jacquemin seemed to settle the defense.  Shelby Fritz was hit by pitch twice, and singled in the seventh to set the table for Ally Golden.  The seniors took over starting in the fifth.  MJ retired 9 of the last 10 batters she faced, and Ally Golden scored twice, then singled in the tying and winning runs (MJ was the winning run) with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 victory.  

The finale of the set against Finneytown was again a nail biter.  Reilly Boss scored the first two runs, while Regan Raymer scored the last two, including the game winner in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Sammy Campbell.

On May 4th, Wyoming visited Deer Park.  Although they came out offensively strong, scoring 4 runs in the top of the first, the defense was a little shaky in the bottom of the second, yielding 6 runs.  The absence of Skylar Wolski (probable concussion) was apparent.  Shelby filled in for Wolski behind the plate, but Wolski’s bat was also sorely missed.  The Cowboys again made the game exciting, as they scored four runs in the top of the sixth to pull within a run, 9-8.   After holding Deer Park scoreless in the sixth, the Cowboys left the tying run at third, and the go-ahead run at second.  With a 7-4 league record, the Cowboys are guaranteed a winning CHL season (the first for this senior class); and with just one league game left against Reading, could place anywhere from second to fourth.

The Cowboys will host Anderson on Saturday and that will be their Senior day.  The game starts at 1 o'clock.  We hope to see you there to support our Cowboys and to wish our Seniors luck in their future!

Softball Sweep

Lisa Golden reported for the Softball team:

The Cowboys had a very good week sweeping the three league games moving into third place in the CHL.  Thursday and Friday’s games were rained out.

Monday versus Madeira saw the Cowboys jump out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Reagan Raymer singled, stole second, and scored on Skylar Wolski’s single.  Madeira scored three in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead.  The Cowboys responded with four runs in the fifth and seventh inning for an 11-5 victory.   Reagan finished the game with 7 assists.  Ally Golden and Skylar went 2 for 4 at the plate.  Madeline Juergens pitched an excellent game by not yielding a walk and retiring the last seven batters.

Tuesday we hosted Taylor looking to avenge the 7th inning loss from last week.  Wyoming leads 7-2 entering the 6th inning.  Ally Golden made 5 plays at short.  Riley Boss scored three runs and Skylar had two hits and a walk in the first five innings.  The Taylor bats then woke up in the final two at bats and tied the score.  Emma Jacquemin scored the winning run when Michaela Fetter singled up the middle with 2 outs for the 8-7 victory.

Wednesday, Madeira visited Wyoming.  Reily Boss went 3 for 4 at the plate followed by strong performances by Skylar, Madeline Juergens and Sammie Campbell.  Sammie’s pair of doubles and Skylar’s double, contributed for half the runs scored by Wyoming.    Backing up MJ’s pitching performance were a strong infield highlighted by spectacular plays by Michaela Fetter who caught 3 line drives to second, several running catches by outfielders Sammie Campbell, Reily Boss and Shelby Fritz. In the end, the Cowboys defense was just too strong for Madeira.  The final score was a win for the Cowboys at 8-3.

This week the Cowboys face Finneytown and a currently undefeated Reading team.  We hope to see you there to cheer us on!

Softball Swinging

Lisa Golden wraps up the week that was for the Softball team:

This past week the Wyoming softball team went 3-1, with the loss of another heartbreaker: bottom seventh, two out surrender of the winning runs to a league opponent.  The week started off on a positive note with a 14-7 victory over Norwood.  The Cowboys scored in every inning against Norwood, and although the score appeared close going into the bottom of the fifth, the Cowgirls scored three and five runs in the next two at bats to put the game away.  Every Wyoming player also either scored, or had an RBI.  Wyoming also played two games against a Mariemont team that is in a building time; and although Mariemont is part of the CHL, these games are not considered league games.  The key game of the week was at Taylor.  The Wyoming bats took a while to emerge, and the Cowboys were down 3-0 entering the 6th inning.  The defense was solid, and although one miscue allowed two runs to score, several hard hit balls were tracked down for outs, and Skylar Wolski threw one base runner out trying to steal.  Shelby Fritz continued an errorless season with three catches in right field.  In the sixth, Reagan singled (one of three hits on the day), and a mis-play by Taylor’s right fielder put Raymer at third with one out.  Reagan came home on a wild pitch to give Wyoming their first run.  Down 3-1, the Cowboys made their move in the top of the seventh scoring Reily Boss on an error, then Jacquemin scored the tying run on a ground out by Michaela, and a double by Raymer scored the two seniors: Juergens and Golden.  Jacquemin had a nice day at the plate, getting two hits, and reaching base all three times.  Unfortunately, Taylor scored three times in the bottom of the seventh, with the last run scoring on a very close force play at second that could have sent the game into extra innings (final 6-5).  Next week, the Cowboys host Taylor, have two games against Madeira, and host Finneytown on Friday.  A non-league game at Roger Bacon on Thursday completes the full week.

Signs of a Streak

The Cowboys softball team showed the emergence of some young talent and heavy hitters during their first week of play.   Returning to the infield this year is the pitcher-catcher team of senior co-captain Madeline Juergens and sophomore Skylar Wolski.  Backing them up along the bases is sophomore Emma Jacquemin (1st), juniors Michaela Fetter (2nd) and Reagan Raymer (3rd) and senior co-captain Allison Golden (SS).  Their back-up in the field are juniors Reily Boss, Sammi Campbell, sophomore Cammie Miller and freshmen Shelby Fritz and Isabel Coyle.

The Softball Cowboys were a half inning away from an exciting 3-0 start last Monday. Two of the three games were against league opponent Indian Hill, facing a hard-throwing, very experienced senior pitcher.  Combined with the cold weather it took awhile for Wyoming to shake the opening day jitters.  Freshman Shelby Fritz recorded her first two hits, as well as 2 RBIs.  Emma Jacquemin showed off some power, one hopping to the right field fence.  Unfortunately, the game ended in the bottom of the 7th with Indian Hill scoring 2 handing the Cowboys a 7-6 opening game loss.

The middle game of the week was probably the best overall game played.  Playing against Cincinnati Christian, the hitting came alive.  Skylar Wolski hit two homeruns and single scoring 5.   Reagan Raymer also scored a homerun and two doubles, logging in 2 RBIs of her own.  Madeline Juergens hit well with a double and racked up 2 RBIs of her own.   A solid Cowboy defense shut down a hard-hitting Cincinnati Christian team gave the Cowboys a 13-6 victory.

The second game against Indian Hill Wednesday saw Wyoming solidly in control through six innings with a 4-0 lead entering the 7th.  The Cowboy’s scored first when Sammi Campbell was singled in after hitting a double to right center field.   Although it appeared the game might get away after 2 hits, 2 walks and an error left the tying run on first with the league’s top hitter at the plate.  A running catch by Shelby in right sealed the 4-2 victory for senior Madeline Juergens.

The Cowboys have had a rain delay with three consecutive rainouts so the Wyoming Cowboys still have a long but exciting season ahead. The Cowboys are getting off to a strong start and we hope to see that continuing in the upcoming games.

Big Wins for the Cowboys

Lisa Golden reported for the Girls Softball Team:

Last week of regulation softball - Time for catching up!:
The Cowboys visited CHCA Tuesday (5/5/15) for a non-league contest.  The starting pitcher for CHCA lasted only one inning and had trouble with her control; hitting two of the three starting batters and walking the next two.  Wyoming scored 7 runs on 3 hits and an error.  In the second inning, their top pitcher came in and Erin Campbell singled, Reily Boss walked then Erin scored on an overthrow while stealing third and Reily followed by scoring on a passed ball.  After that, she gained control and retired 9 of the next 10 batters.  Meanwhile, Madeline (MJ) Juegens a solid 4 innings allowing only 5 base runners and no runs.  The Cowboys’ defense was also solid with Michaela Fetter, Olivia Munneke and Allison Golden.  Sammy Campbell, Lyndsay Sasson, and Allison each had 2 hits with Allison adding 2 more RBIs to her stats and one of Sammy’s hits was a run-scoring double.  Final score was a 10-4 victory for the Cowboys.

Wyoming hosted Reading on Wednesday, May 6th.  It was also the Cowboy’s senior night honoring our shortstop Olivia Munneke and 2nd baseman, Erin Campbell.  Reading started the game strong, scoring 3 hits in the first inning and another in the top of the third inning.  In the bottom of the third inning, Allison Golden smacked a double, scoring Lyndsay Sasson for her first of 2 RBIs.  Her second would come in the bottom of the fifth with a single to left, scoring Reagan Raymer.  Reading would add another two bringing the score to 6-2 Reading going into the bottom of six.   Sammy Campbell achieved her second hit of the game with a 2RBI double scoring her sister Erin and Reily Boss closing the gap to 6-4.  A defining play for Reading was a hard line drive hit by Sasson which Reading’s shortstop robbed her of the game tying hit, ending the inning.  Unfortunately, Reading broke the game wide open in the top of the 7th by adding 6 more runs.  Final Score:  Reading wins 12-4.

On Thursday, May 7, the Cowboys played at Madeira for the final league game of the season.  Katie Lewis took the mound; pitched all seven innings; did not give up a walk and struck out three.  The Cowboy defense was solid throughout the game, allowing only one unearned run.  After 5 innings, the Cowboys led 9-1.  The offense was consistent as every starter had at least one hit, and they scored in all but the fifth inning.  Madeline “MJ” Juergens and Reagan Raymer each had 3 hits (two of Reagan’s were doubles), and Sammy Campbell also added another double to her resume.  The Cowboys preserved the victory.   Final Score:  Wyoming wins 11-5.
