Jay Klein, Chris Murray, Joe Kelly and Nolan Morley have all qualified for the state finals in tennis.  Play begins on Friday morning.  There will be a state send off for the student athletes on Thursday at 2:45pm in the Rotunda.  All are welcome!  Go Cowboys!

Tennis To Districts

And good luck to our Wyoming Varsity Doubles Teams (Nolan Morley and Joe Kelly, and Jay Klein and Chris Murray) who qualified for the Ohio Southwest District Championships. Districts start this Wednesday, May 18, Centerville High School."

Tennis Senior Night - REVISED

Susan Osha keeps us in the loop.

The men's tennis team is finishing the regular season strong with wins over Summit Country Day (4-1), Winton Woods (5-0), and Anderson (4-1). In the state-qualifying matchup against CCDS, the Cowboys ended up 2-3. 

This week, the team moves on to sectionals. The draw is below. 

Doubles teams are Joe Kelly (9)/Nolan Morely (12) and Jay Klein (12)/Chris Murray (12). 

George Arenas (10), Adam Behrman (11) and Zach Osha (11) will play in the singles draw. Klein/Murray are the #2 seeded doubles team.

Coaches Classic Finalists

Varsity Tennis Doubles Chris Murray and Jay Klein, both seniors, and Nolan Morely, senior and Joseph Kelly, freshman will be playing in the Finals of the Coaches Classic on Saturday, April 30th at CHCA.

Boys Tennis on a Tear

After facing some extremely tough opponents to start the season, the men's varsity tennis team gained some traction last week with wins against St. Xavier B (4-1) on Wednesday and a sweep on Thursday at Ross (5-0). 

On Saturday, 4/16, the Cowboys traveled to The University of Dayton to play Oakwood in the first round of the team state tournament and came away with wins on all five courts. 

The Cowboys posted a win over Mariemont, 4-1, on Monday, 4/18.

One for the Record Books

Bob Carter loves putting in the overtime (or at least we love making him).  We kept him reporting well after the regular season ended.  Now he wraps up the Boys Tennis season for us.

Special Edition: The Boys Varsity Tennis team wrapped up their season by placing 2nd in the State Division II Doubles Tournament in Columbus!

Sixteen of the best Division II doubles teams from all around the state played this past weekend on The Ohio State campus, and the setting was just like professional tennis: match umpires sitting on tall chairs calling out the score, players challenging calls, big score board, and a large section for spectator viewing. They even open up a new can of tennis balls if the match goes to a third set. If you have ever been to the ATP tournament in Mason, the excitement and intensity at the state tournament was every bit the same.

Myles Bourbon and Will Carter represented the Cowboys in Division II Doubles play at the state tournament.  Myles and Will were the Mason Section DII Doubles Champs and the Southwest District DII Doubles  Champs  heading into the state tournament. They beat their first three opponents from, respectively, Beechwood (Cleveland), Lexington (near Mansfield), and Ottawa Hills (Toledo) to advance to the state finals match. Roughly 300 to 400 Division II doubles teams started the tournament, and it came down to just two teams: Wyoming versus Cincinnati Country Day. This was one of the hardest fought and best played matches I have ever seen (and I’m not just saying that as the Dad of one of the players), but  Myles and Will lost by the slimmest of margins: 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 with 8-10 in the third set tie breaker (think of it like double overtime). A more exciting tennis match, you will not watch. As the runner up in the finals match, Will and Myles placed 2nd in the State Division II Doubles Tournament for 2015!!

To understand how big of an achievement this is, we have to go back to the record books. Wyoming has a rich tradition of competitive tennis, and took 3rd place in Division II state doubles play in both 2009 and 2011. But you have to go back over 40 years to find a Wyoming doubles team (or individual singles player, for that matter) to have placed 2nd in the state, or better. For you long time Wyoming residents, the doubles team of Steve Bernard and Jake Agna also came in 2nd in the state in 1971 (and, coincidentally, they also lost to Cincinnati Country Day, by a score of 6-0, 6-1). So, as the 2015 Boys Varsity Tennis season comes to an end, Will and Myles can proudly take their place in the OHSAA (state), Southwest District, and Wyoming High School record books!

Given this accomplishment, Myles and Will stated getting congratulatory notes from friends literally as soon as the match ended. How was that possible?  Kieren Thomas, who cheered the team on at EVERY state match, also live tweeted updates from the game!  I’m not exactly sure what a tweet is, but I’m told it’s a good thing.

The Boys Varsity Tennis team worked hard this entire season, and it shows in the end of season awards, as noted below. Congratulations to team captains and graduating seniors Myles, Will, and Kieren. And, finally,  a special BIG THANKS to coach Laurie Hoppenjans.

The Sweet Sixteen

Bob Carter is still on the job reporting for the Boys Tennis team:

The school year may just about be over, but the Boys Varsity Tennis season is still going strong.

Quick Recap:  A total of 5 players qualified for the Southwest District Division II tournament – the strongest showing for Wyoming in the past 8+ years: Chris Murray at singles, Nolan Morley/Kieren Thomas at doubles, and Myles Bourbon/Will Carter at doubles.

District play is divided into two rounds: elimination play (on 5/20), and seeding play (on 5/23).  Even after some great end-of-year tennis, Chris and Nolan/Kieran lost in the elimination rounds.  However, Myles/Will won both of their matches on 5/20 (including a win versus a very good team from Indian Hill) to advance to seeding play.

During seeding play on 5/23, Will and Myles faced Cincinnati Country Day and Milton Union, and came away with two more wins - and are now the Division II District Doubles Champions!  Between the sectional and district tournaments, Myles and Will are: 8 matches played, and 8 matches won. As such, Myles and Will qualified for the state tournament as one of the 1st seeds – WAY TO GO!

Across the state, roughly 400 doubles teams started tournament play. We are now down to the final 16 doubles teams (in Division II) which will meet up at the state tournament starting on Friday (5/29) in Columbus. If they can win their first two matches, Will and Myles continue match play on Saturday (5/30), also in Columbus.

Destination: Districts

With the success of the Boys Tennis team, Bob Carter is still on the job.

The Cowboys compete in the Southwest Ohio District, which is comprised of four sections: Cinti, Mason (where Wyoming competes), Dayton, and Troy. Across these four sections, there are roughly 130 singles players, and 100 doubles players each vying for 1 of 16 highly coveted spots in the district tournament (that is, 16 spots for singles, and 16 spots for doubles at districts). So, earning one of these limited spots is a BIG deal!

The team played a tough schedule this season, and that high level of competition really paid off as three teams/players qualified for districts - which is one of the best showings for the Cowboys in many years: Chris Murray (singles), Nolan Morley/Kieren Thomas (doubles), and Myles Bourbon/Will Carter (doubles).

On this past Saturday (5/16) these players competed in the seeding competition which is used to determine the line-up at districts. Nolan and Kieren ended up as one of the 4th seeds, Chris Murray as one of the 3rd seeds, and Myles and Will as one of the 1st seeds (as they won the Mason sectionals tournament, after beating two different teams from Seven Hills).

Next up: district play on Weds (5/20) at Centerville High School. The stress and the stakes keep going up as the players each play up to two elimination matches that day (i.e. one loss and done). GOOD LUCK to all of the Wyoming competitors at the upcoming match play!

Tuesday, May 12th, the JV Tennis team ended their season at Elder.  The team looked great won 4-1.

Super at Sectionals

Bob Carter keeps the Tennis season alive for us with his report and pictures.

Tuesday marked the start of the Southwest Ohio tennis sectional tournament, where Wyoming competed in the DII Mason sectional. There were over 32 singles players and 28 doubles teams participating in the Mason Section, and the format is both simple and high stakes: one loss and you are out of the tournament.

Representing Wyoming for singles are: Jay Klein, Chris Murray, and Alex Sfyris; and doubles teams are: Nolan Morley/Kieren Thomas and Myles Bourbon/Will Carter.

After the dust settled, Wyoming finished the day with 9 wins and 2 losses. In fact, three teams/players made the cut for districts: Chris Murray at singles; and both doubles teams (Nolan Morley/Kieren Thomas and Myles Bourbon/Will Carter). This is the best showing in the sectionals for the Cowboys in the past 4 years – and probably much longer than that!  

Next up: the remaining players/teams play on Saturday (5/16) for top seeding at the District Tournament.

Seniors Serve Mariemont

Bob Carter wraps up the regular season for the Boys Tennis team.

The Boys Varsity Tennis team finished out the regular season with three straight games from Weds (5/6) to Friday (5/8).

The team lost close matches on Weds versus Indian Hill (2-3), and versus Walnut Hills (2-3) on Thurs. Both matches were hard fought and very exciting to watch.  The Cowboys re-grouped to resoundingly beat Mariemont at home by a score of 4-1 on Friday – which was also Senior Day (and the last game of the regular season).  The team finished the year with an 8-6 record overall, and 3-1 in the CHL – which earned the Cowboys second place in the league!

Graduating seniors and captains on the tennis team are: Myles Bourbon, Will Carter, and Kieren Thomas.  Over the past 4 years, the tennis team has a cumulative record of 16-3 in the CHL and earned one league title (in 2014), and came in second place in each of the other three years. They will certainly be missed.

As a parent of a graduating senior, I’m certainly sad to see the end of the regular season.  But… the good news: the post season sectionals start next week (on Tues, 5/12). Stayed tuned!
