Thanksgiving Day Racers

Some of the old gang got back together for the 2014 Thanksgiving Day Race.  I guess Danielle McKee, Isabella Renggli, Whitley Elsass, Lily Parker, and Emily Wood didn't see our post about how they were supposed to be playing Touch Football on Thanksgiving.

Volleyball All-Star Showcase

Alexis Tyree and Grace Schneider will be playing in the Volleyball All-Star game on Thursday, November 13th at Lakota West.

5:30 warm-ups begin for the showcase games; there are 4 teams of 12 players.
5:50 introduction of players
6-7 games (2 games going at once)
7-8 awards (academic, all-district, etc)
8-9 all-star match (2 teams of 18 players)

All-Star Dual District Dominators

What an exciting fall it was to be a Wyoming soccer player! After digging through the archives and doing some additional fact checking, it is believed to be the first time in school history that the Girls and Boys Soccer Teams won a District Title in the same season!!!

But it doesn't end there, because the good news for both soccer programs keeps rolling in (no pun intended)... On Saturday, November 9th Princeton High School will host the annual Girls and Boys All-Southwest Ohio Senior All Star Game. The best high school girls and boys soccer players in the city will be recognized for their talents and the senior all-stars will get to lace up their cleats one more time with their peers. The festivities begin at 2:15 with the Girls Senior All-Star Game, followed up with an awards ceremony for All-City players at 3:55, and then the finale with the Boys Senior All-Star Game at 5:00.

Admission is $5 and children under 10 are free. Come out and support the following Wyoming Cowboys that will take part in this event:

Girls 1st Team All-Southwest Ohio:

Head Coach Lauren Gruber was voted CHL Coach of the Year and DII Southwest

 Co-Coach of the Year, and will be coaching in the All-Star Game on the girls side.

Senior Toby Varland will be playing in the Boys All-Star Game. 

In addition, Head Coach Steve Thomas was voted CHL Coach of the Year and DII Southwest Coach of the Year, and will be coaching in the All-Star Game on the boys side.

Congratulations to all of the players and coaches in both programs on a fantastic fall. Come watch some great soccer on November 9th and support your Wyoming Cowboys!!!

The Drive to Districts

It is now official – we will play Dayton Carroll for the District title on Thursday, October 3rd. The game will be played at Eaton High School and will begin at 7 pm.

Eaton High School is located at  600 Hillcrest Drive, Eaton, OH 45320. 

Eaton High School is approximately an hour drive from Wyoming.

You Just Gotta Be There

I hope everyone is as excited as I am for tonight’s game!

This season began the week after school was out in June. The players have worked very hard and the results have shown that all the hard work has paid off. Tonight’s last CHL contest against Reading is an opportunity for the varsity players to achieve the outright CHL League championship.

This was a goal that the players set for themselves early in the summer. It has been a long time (1985 to be exact) since Wyoming Men’s Soccer has won the league title outright.

We also have an opportunity to accomplish something that I am not sure has ever happened before. If we shut-out Reading tonight, we will have gone through the entire season without allowing a goal against any CHL opponent.

I say all this to strongly encourage each and every person to come out tonight and cheer for your team! Invite everyone you know to come. Let’s demonstrate our fantastic support and appreciation for all the hard work that the players have put in this season.

The game will be played at the Reading Veterans Memorial Stadium and not at Reading High School. The stadium is located at 810 E. Columbia Avenue, Reading, OH 45215

Wyoming at the World Cup

Some of the members of the Wyoming High School Men's team took part in a World Refugee Day soccer tournament over the weekend.

The World Refugee Day “World Cup” brought together the various refugee communities in Greater Cincinnati for a family day of Youth, High School, and Adult activities.  A total of 8 High School (14-19) teams participated in a bracket style “World Cup” tournament. The teams were organized by “country.”  We were USA 1.

The purpose of this event was to celebrate the World Refugee Day, to bring the refugee community together and to raise awareness of the refugee communities within the Cincinnati community.

Border War

On June 14th, three of our Cowboys helped to represent Ohio in the 1st Ohio Michigan High School Border Classic.  Coach Hancock was selected as the Defensive Coordinator and Jalen Fox was a defensive Back and Griffin O'Gara was on the Defensive Line.

Pictures tell the story, that's true.  But sometimes the story can't be told all at once.  Sometimes you need the sequel.  Think of the classics: The Older Man and the Sea, The Answer of the Wild, Lunch at Tiffanys, The Next-to-Last of the Mohicans... you get the idea.  One of my favorite two-picture stories of the year came from the lens of Rod Apfelbeck at this game.

Unlike the turkey in my refrigerator, football doesn't seem to ever go out of season.  For those of you already marking off the days until the Cowboy's 2014-15 season opener, here's a small fix to get you through.

The Ron Woyan East-West All-Star Game is 7:30 this Thursday, June 12th at Kings.

If you're the shy type and are worried you won't know anyone there, don't.  The CHL will be well represented.  Look for these familiar faces:

Saturday, May 17th was the Color Me Rad 5K at Kings Island.  We'd love to see our Cowboys in your  blue-teethed, orange-haired, pink-eyed pics.

More Than Half-Marathoners

We asked for stories or photos of those who ran in the Flying Pig races recently.  We didn't get a big response.  

You're all so bashful.  C'mon, it's okay.  No one is going to snicker at the 14 hours it took you to finish the 10k.  You should be proud you finished at all.  That's reason I stopped running in event races.  During my first and last race, I didn't officially finish.  But it wasn't really my fault.  After a while I couldn't really distinguish where the race course was anymore because of all the traffic.  I guess after two days, it is a little unreasonable to expect the organizers to keep a 5k course clear.

Cancer vs. Coaches

Our Varsity baseball team will be playing Mariemont next week on Wednesday, April 23rd at 6 PM at Crosley Field in Blue Ash. This is a Cancer vs. Coaches game.

There will be a $5 admission to the game with all proceeds being donated to the Cancer Support Center of Cincinnati.

We will be donating in the name of Jeff Hurt.  Jeff is the current head coach at Amelia High School.  He is fighting brain cancer for the second time.

Please consider attending the game and helping to support the cause.

Girls' Soccer Looks Promising

This weekend, the Girls' Soccer team competed in the Nike Elite Tournament with about 40 other high school teams from across Ohio.  The team tied Colerain where the incoming freshman Jasmine Evans.  The second game against Monroe also ended in a tie at 0-0 with Junior Olivia Munneke recording the shutout.  Sounds like it's going to be an exciting season.

Boys' Soccer Cleans-Up in Batavia

Summer's almost over and Deb Varland's no slouching slacker. She's already back to the grind shooting soccer for us here at the Round-Up. She made it to the Batavia Pre-Season Tournament to catch the Boys' teams. The Older Team went 4 for 4 while the Younger Team split down the middle with 2 wins and 2 second place finishes.

Super Soccer Saturday

Come on, you know cutting the grass won't take all day, and you know watching the Lumberjack's Challenge on TUFF TV (right, I don't have cable) isn't really satisfying that deep down need for some Cowboy sports action.  It seems like the only thing to do is head out to Batavia on Saturday, July 27th to support the pre-season Boys' Soccer team.  The boys aren't the only ones who need the pre-season to warm up.  It'd be a shame if at the first regular season game you lost your voice as you cheered your lungs out and had to spend the next few weeks on the DL.
