Breaking the Tape

Saturday, October 17th, the Cross Country teams competed in the CHL Championships at the Kings Island Golf Course in Mason.

A large number of our runners posted season-best and career-best times last Saturday in the JV and Varsity races at the Bruin Golf Course. Among the highlights were three of our girls moving up or entering the WHS all-time top twenty rankings! Junior Whitley Elsass won the girls race, posting a 19:46. Senior Danielle McKee followed close behind in 20:11, and freshman Riley Bahr broke into our record book with her 20:35. In the boys race, senior Cullen O'Brien ran a 16:45, putting him in our top 10 and earning first-team all-CHL honors. Congratulations on these great performances and to everyone who made Saturday--and the entire season--so special!

The Varsity teams then competed at the Regional Championships in Troy in Saturday, October 31st where the Girls team finished in 6th place.

The Middle School teams also competed at the CHL Championships where both the Girls and Boys teams finished 2nd.

Brought To You By The Number 1

Coach Nocks reported for his magnificent Middle School Cross Country team.

The Middle School Cross Country team headed to the Harrison Middle School Cross Country Invitational on Thursday October 1.  Who knew the date (the number 1) would be such a theme for this meet.  I hope you keep reading and don't just assume you know what the number 1 is referring.  

Cross County is similar to the sport of Golf, except there are no clubs, caddies, golf carts. golf balls, club houses.....well on second thought there is very little in common with Golf. (We love Golf and here is a shout out to the Wyoming Golf teams).  What we do share is how the scoring is done.  The team with the lowest score wins.   Leaving most of the technical scoring rules out, the place a runner comes in is their score and the score for the first 5 runners is added together to make up the team score.  To keep the reader entertained, here is a game, see if you can identify where the previously mentioned theme fits in.

Here are some highlights of the meet,
        7th grade girls were first  in the Team Race
                   Peggy Moore was 2nd (out of 86)
         Shelby Sash and Chloe Constantinides were in the top 11

        8th grade girls were second  in the Team Race.  They missed first by 1 point
Sarah Schaen was 2nd (out of 81)
Lucy Spera, Tiffany Chen and Ava Berger were in the top 12

        7th grade boys were third  in the Team Race.  They missed second by 1 point
Joey Trapp, Colin Sorensen and Andrew Stoppenhagen were in the top 14

        8th grade boys were second in the Team Race
Conner Moore, Thomas Stickney, Ken Chen, Joshua Parker and John Nice were in the top 17

         8th grade boys were Third in the Open Race.  They missed second by 3 points
Trevor Vollette, Ryan Loney, Chris Izenson and Kyle Ryan were in the top 16

Wyoming Middle School Cross Country brought home 4 trophies.  We received a trophy from every race that gave out trophies. We were the only school that accomplished this!!

Fast in Fairfield

Coach Nocks always keeps us in the know with the always strong Middle School Cross Country teams.

It was a glorious day to run.  The sun was shining the birds were singing the bees were buzzing.  Quite literally they were. There were Sweat Bees everywhere. Fun fact, Sweat Bee is the common name for any of a large family of bees, many of which are attracted to the salts in human perspiration.   I guess they were there for us.  Bees or no Bees, the Middle School Cross Country team had a great showing at our first meet of the season at the Fairfield Invitational on August 24. Below are some highlights

Three 7th Grade boys in the top 15

Two  8th Grade boys in the top 15 (4 in the top 20)

Three 8th Grade girls in the top 15

Cara Cavanaugh won the 7th Grade girls race

7th Grade boys were 3rd out of 7.  They beat the 4th place team by 1 point and the 5th place team by 2 points.  It was very close.  It is a perfect example of how something as simple as beating 1 runner at the end counts for so much.

7th Grade girls were 6th out of 9

8th Grade boys were 3rd out of 11

8th Grade girls were 2nd out of 8.  Again 1 point difference between 2nd and 3rd place

If I Ran the XC Zoo

Not only because he was the only applicant,WMSMC XC Coach Randy Nocks has been named the 2014 Round Up Poet Laureate.   His innaugural work follows

Dr Seuss seems to be everywhere.  With the the MS Suessical and the string teachers dressing up as Dr Seuss characters, I thought this report should continue with that theme.

The middle school cross country finished the season and competed at the CHL

They all ran their best which was fun to see

and the result doesn't rhyme with one or three.

That is right, they were second.

The team was runner up.  So, it doesn't rhyme so what.

In case that is not enough and you want more fun

Here we have Chen 1 and Chen 2.

They have the same uniform number of 321.

One thing to consider even though they seem similar

is that they are not related at all, isn't that peculiar

Some are related, just take McCullumsmiths 3

So as you can see, the athletes run hard but we fun

so consider next year to join us and come out and run.

PR Propensity

From Coach Nocks,

The Middle School Cross Country team competed at the Winton Woods Invitational on Sept 18th.  Up to this point in the season the girls have had the bragging rights in the trophy race but the boys have evened things up with the 7th grade boys placing second against a large field and very challenging course.  You know it must be challenging when they give names to the hills.  The athletes ran on Mt. Kilaman and Oneheckuva Hill.

The Middle School Cross Country team then competed at Hopewell Invitational on Sept 23. The team finished in the middle of the pack which considering we were competing against huge schools like Mason, Nagel and Sycamore is not bad.  There is one significant accomplishment or many depending on how you look at it and that is every single runner that ran yesterday got a PR.

The Blue Streak

Coach Nocks reports for his Middle School Cross County Cowboys and their great showing at the September 4th Sacred Heart Invitational.

Even a big parade on the west side could not keep the MS CC team away.  With no buses to take the athletes to the meet, the parents swooped in.  Well, actually drove in and transported the athletes to the meet (In Cheerleading fashion....'G'....'O'......'GO Parents!')

The athletes once again proved they can compete with anyone.  Especially the girls that came in second in both of their races.  Many athletes (Boys and Girls) took home medals and got PRs.  Below are just a few standout performances.

Ones to Watch

From the MS Cross Country Coach, Randy Nocks,

The Middle School Cross Country team ran their first meet of the season at the Fairfield Invitational on Aug 27th.   The temperature was hot but so were the MS CC runners.  Even running against large schools including Mason and Lakota, the cowboys held their own.  Everyone ran a PR for the season at this meet (this was the first meet.....but still)

7th grade boys were 2nd out of 10

Jesse Levine finished FIRST out of 142 boys in the 7th grade boys race

7th grade girls were 4th out of 12
Sarah Schaen was sixth out of 140 girls in the 7th grade girls race

8th grade girls were 6th out of 9
Dagny Mccullumsmith was eighth out of 114 girls in the 8th grade girls race.  The first runner to finish from a school other than Mason.

8th grade boys were 9th out of 14

Fast Times at Middle School CHL

Coach Nocks sent in a report from the MS Cross County team's results at the CHL meet in Sharon Woods on Saturday, October 12.

 

Everyone ran hard at the CHL and the coaches couldn't of asked for anything else. About half the team ran their fastest time of the season and a number of other runners were very close.  

 

The girls were second and we had 3 runners in the top 10! With the next two in the top 24.

Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are

Saturday, October 12th is the CHL Cross Country meet at Sharon Woods. 

 

The following is from MS Coach, Randy Nocks

 

This is our main meet. It is also our smallest. We will be competing against just the league schools and it is for bragging rights to see who wins the CHL. We would love to have as many spectators cheering the runners on as possible, so parents come out to the meet and bring siblings, friends, neighbors, whomever you want to help cheer on the team.

 

I'm with the coach on this one.  The sidelines should look something like this...

 

Race Times:

9:00: MS Girls

9:30: MS Boys

10:25: MS Awards

10:10: HS Girls Open

10:50: HS Boys Open

11:30: HS Girls Team Race

12:15: HS Boys Team Race

1:00: HS Awards

And if you don't bleed Blue and White, and just a fair-weather fan... it's okay.  There promises to be something for you too.  Last weekend, the Boys' HS team took the top spot at the St. X meet, and on Thursday, October 3rd, the Girls' MS team blew past all comers at the Harrison meet, with many of the girls' earnig medals. 

 

The teams are having a great season.  Come out and show your support.

MS Mass Transit

I've heard of the Axis of Evil, but the Axles of Evil? 

 

Coach Nocks sent in the following report from the Middle School Cross Country team's showing at the St. X Invitational on Saturday, September 28th.

 

Once again, the middle school cross country team had to battle against the bus company.  The bus company (which I am sure is in league with the other CHL teams) arrived to pick up the team only 1 hour and 15 minutes late.  The CC team prevailed over this obstacle with the help of its super parents, which this week acted as bus drivers to shuttle most of the team to St X to get them there in time for their race.   

This meet was the largest one the CC team has run.  There were about 28 teams from all over Ohio and Kentucky.  Again, the CC team was competing against Division 1 and 2 schools.  The team held their own and finished about in the middle.   The more impressive news is that most of the runners got a PR at this meet.

Huge Heart at Hopewell

Coach Nocks sent in the following report from the Tuesday, September 24th Middle School Cross Country meet at Hopewell.

 

The sun was shining and the buses were on time. It made for a fabulous cross country meet. The middle school CC team ran against many schools, most division 1 and they held their own. The boys finished 8th out of 13 and the girls finished 5th out of 11.

Looking Good

We have photos from the Middle School Cross Country meet at Winton Woods from September 19th.  I don't have results, but that sure looks like a medal around Parker's neck.
