Tough Time for Softball

Lisa Golden catches us up with the Softball team:

Wyoming hosted the league leading Deer Park team Wednesday (April 27th).  Reily Boss and Olivia Munneke each had two hits leading an offense that had 8 hits and 5 walks, but could manage only 2 runs in 6 innings.  Meanwhile the defense made some errors and struggled to make the third outs and ended up surrendering 12 runs on 14 hits and 3 walks.  Typical of the day, the Wyoming defense had Deer Park grounding out only 5 times.   In contrast, the one-loss Deer Park scored six runs in the first two innings, all with two outs, and another six in the last two to finish off the Cowboys 12-2.

The following day (Thursday, April 28th), Wyoming visited New Richmond’s all weather field.  The Cowboys were only able to achieve one hit per inning until the 4th inning when Erin Campbell hit a deep single to left center field.  Skylar Wolski then moved Erinto third with her ground ball single followed by Reily Boss’s RBI ground out to score Erin.  Michaela Fetter then was able to bat in Wolski for her 14th RBI of the season.  Michaela by the way is in the top 10 in the league for RBIs.  By the top of the 4th the Cowboys were down 4-2.  After a rough bottom of the 4th, New Richmond scored 7 times, and the Wyoming bats were just not able to make it up.  By the end of the game the final score was a loss, 12-3.
Thanks to Lisa Golden for the report, and
Thanks to Rod Apfelbeck for the great pictures from the Deer Park game.

Warriors Over Wyoming

From Coach Crawford

The Wyoming Girl's HS Lax team travelled to Mariemont on Thursday night.  Both JV and Varsity squads came up short in their respective games.   The JV saw the debut of goalie Ellen Boster who recorded 8 saves despite the 4 to 8 loss.  Goals were scored by Ashley Moher (2) and Madelyn Taylor (2).  Annie Boster lead the team in Draw Controls with 6.

Behind a strong showing from the defense consisting of Grace Schneider, Emma Komrska, Grace Steiner, Lindsay Stewart, and Grace Steiner, Junior Goalie Claire Mellott had a solid performance recording 5 saves and holding an impressive Mariemont offense to just 9 goals, Mariemont's second lowest goal production of the season.  Cowboy scoring was held in check distributed between Maggie Hughes (2), Adi Smith (2), and Reilly Simmons (1) resulting in a final score 5 to 9.

Next up, Mt Notre Dame at Mt Notre Dame HS on Saturday; JV gametime at 1pm, Varsity at 2:30.

Middle School Girls Lacrosse Splits With Indian Hill

David Walton answered the call and filed a great report for the Middle School Girls Lacrosse team.

Wednesday night the Wyoming Middle School lacrosse teams hosted two games against always tough Indian Hill.  The first game started off rough with Wyoming falling behind by four goals early on 5-1.  Coach Simmons inspirational speech got the girls focused and Wyoming responded with great goaltending from Olivia Grady and three goals before the break, including two from Libby Wadds, the Cowboys brought things within a goal at the break, 5-4.  Indian Hill expected to pull away in the second half, but it didn’t happen.  Led by some phenomenal end-to-end efforts from Caroline Meis, Kelly Lyons, and Greta Warmbier, every time Indian Hill got up by two goals, Wyoming trimmed it to one, and it was still within reach at 7-6 thanks to a couple of goals from Kylee Berigan.  Not wanting to chance giving the ball back to the Cowboys, Indian Hill started spread out the field late in the game to play stall ball to run out the clock, and Wyoming had to take chances on defense.  That led to a couple of easy goals by Indian Hill in the last few minutes but with Olivia making a phenomenal stop in the closing seconds to keep the final margin at Wyoming 6, Indian Hill 9.

The second game saw Indian Hill jump out to another quick 3-0 lead thanks to shots directly from the setting sun that goalie Grace Desserich could not see at all.  But the Cowboys wouldn’t give up; Cate Hummel, Peyton Osha, and Abby Buysse all tallied key goals and Wyoming bounced back.  Still down 7-5 with just  five minutes left in the game, Wyoming stiffened behind Lauren Montgomery’s first game ever as goalie and took control of play, bringing it into a 7-7 tie with just a few minutes remaining.  When Wyoming got the ball back with 90 seconds left, coach Simmons called a key timeout and set up a clear out play for Maia Davis, who took the ball around goal and buried a wraparound for the 8-7 lead.  The Cowboys withstood several last minute rushes from the Indian Hill offense but stood tough, and when Riley Bahr grabbed a ground ball with 10 seconds left and ran it out of her end, Wyoming had a hard-earned 8-7 victory.  They’ve now beaten every team in the league at least once this year and their record stands at 16-6-2.

Thank You

I am not a researcher or investigative journalist, nor do I play one on TV.  I am more like a compiler.  This means the great stuff you see in the Round Up was sent in by someone awesome, someone just like you.  Taking this further, it also means if there's something you don't see in the Round Up it's because you haven't sent it in.

Since being the compiler is such a super-cush job, I have free time on my hands to take up a day job.  Occasionally my day job forgets that it's not more important than highlighting Wyoming's athletes and tries to monopolize my time.  This has been one of those weeks.

So if you are a contributor and I forgot to thank you personally this week, , please accept my apology and this public THANK YOU!!

And if you aren't a contributor, why not?
