Senior Night Score-Fest

Varsity DOBO John Brown sent us the good news from Baseball's Senior Night.
Big win on senior night for the Cowboys today (Thursday, May 9th)! 17-0 victory led by the pitching of Casey Howell. Howell pitched 5 innings, allowing just 2 hits with 9 strikeouts. Our seniors led us batting wise, with Kyle Guggenheim going 2-4 with 2 RBIs, Daniel Gilbert going 1-2 with 2 RBIs scoring 3 runs, and Hayden Sharp going 3-4 with 2RBIs scoring 3 runs. This was our last scheduled regular season game as we take on the winner of the Hughes vs Bethel-Tate game in the playoffs.

And THANKS to DOBO John Brown for bringing us the good news game after game.

2nd Half Smack-Down

Coach Crawford sent the following report from the Girls' Lacrosse team's road trip to end the regular season.

In a game of two halves, the Girls HS lacrosse team closed their regular season on a high note with a win over Centerville, 12 to 5. After starting strong leading 3 to 1 early in the first half, the Cowboys saw a determined Centerville team come back to a 4 to 4 tie at the close of the first half. Centerville stormed out early opening the second half to take the lead 4 to 5. But, digging deep and showing their true lacrosse mettle, the Cowboys went on a rant scoring 8 unanswered goals. Freshman Goalie Clare Mellott recorded 6 saves, many in the first half, which had kept the game close as well as the play by her supporting low defense. Scoring was lead by Carly Levick with 4, followed by Becky Denson and Marta Stewart each with 2, and MJ Fischer, Claire Crawford, Adi Smith, and freshman Reilly Simmons recorded 1 goal each. Assists were lead by Maggie Hughes with 3, Claire Crawford with 2, and freshmen Reilly Simmons and Haley Stewart each with 1.

The Cowboys close their regular season with an impressive 11 wins, 4 loss record, as they move into State tournament play with an opening round game at Home next Monday, May 13, game time 7pm against Columbus Bishop Hartley

Rain Rain Go Away

We're not sure what kind of voodoo rain-dance the Aviators were working on but it worked and Sycamore was able to avoid a crushing defeat at the hands of the Cowboys on Wednesday, May 8th, as the game was called due to the weather.
Thanks to "Lightning" Rod Apfelbeck for the great pictures.
(I know , I know..."Lightning Rod" was pretty lame.  I tried to not type it, but there was nothing I could do.)

That Ball is GONE

Tuesday, May 7th, the Girls' Softball team squeaked out a win over CHCA.  With a 20-1 score it wasn't exactly a nail-biter and you might not think there was too much excited about.  You'd be wrong.  Senior Taylor Singleton scored 4 of those points herself in one at bat.

GRAND SLAM!

How cool is that!!

Thanks to Skip Koesterman for sending in the good word and the picture.

Spectacular Senior Night

Tuesday, May 7th, the faithful showed a fierce disregard for mother nature as they laughed in the face of a cold rain to gather in honor the Seniors of the Girls Lacrosse team.  Coach Crawford sent us the following report from the game.

The Girls HS Lacrosse team celebrated Senior Night with a win over Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy 16 to 3. Senior Co-Captain MJ Fischer scored once and had 3 assists while senior Co-Captain Carly Levick scored three times and had 1 assist. Other scorers included Adi Smith with 4, freshman Reilly Simmons, Maggie Hughes, and Claire Crawford with 2 each, and Emma Komrska and Marta Stewart each with 1. Assists were also recorded by Claire Crawford with 2, and Adi Smith and Marta Stewart each with 1. Team defense held CHCA to 9 shots of which freshman goalie Clare Mellott gathered in 5 saves.

Next up, an away game and season closer on Thursday (May 9th) with Centerville.

We didn't want to cause a scene, so we took their picture anyway.  But someone really should have told these guys it was Senior Night... not Señor Night.

The Round-Up's part-time staff photographer wanna-be was flanked by two living legends of local sports photography who were ready to capture the action.  The above pictures are Arch Cunningham or the Round-Up.  Keep an eye out for an update that will include photos by Rod Apfelbeck.

Ultimate CHAMPIONS

Coach George White had good news - scratch that - GREAT news from the Ultimate Frisbee Championship Tournament on Saturday, May 4th.

Wyoming capped an undefeated season by beating previously undefeated Mason 12-10 in overtime in a thrilling tournament final to win the championship. Wyoming won six consecutive games in the 16-team tournament on Saturday to win the tournament, beating Moeller/Mt. Notre Dame, Milford, Oak Hills, Lebanon, and Walnut Hills prior to defeating Mason.
The Jackrabbits, as Wyoming's team is known, received solid contributions from all 20 students on the roster, and were led all day by seniors Eric Reichwein, David Weinrich, and Khafra Flynn. Senior Shaun Wilson-Woodrow fired up the team with his inspired play accounting for four goals in the semi-finals against Walnut Hills, when the Jackrabbits recovered from an early 3-1 deficit and trailed 6-5 at halftime, before reeling off six straight points to win 11-6. Senior Katie Scholles also turned in a strong performance on the offensive and defensive ends.
In the final, the Jackrabbits trailed 3-0 early, but behind the strong defense and offensive throwing skills of Reichwein, Weinrich and junior Sam White, great pressure zone D, and the emotional leadership and play of senior Ethan Padnos, came back to knot the game at 10, taking the game into overtime. Flynn then scored the final two goals, the last set up by an interception by freshman Joe White and a short scoring pass from fellow senior Weinrich. Scoring leaders for Wyoming in the final: Flynn (four scoring catches and one scoring throw), Joe White (one and four), Reichwein (one and two), Weinrich (one and two), and junior Chloe Halsted (two catches).

The tournament championship is Wyoming's first since 1999, and wraps up a successful Ultimate career for the 13 seniors on the varsity, most of whom joined the club as sophomores and led a resurrection of the program. While the Jackrabbits will miss all 13 seniors, they will return eight varsity players next season, when the team will also elevate many players from this year's 25-player reserve roster.

Thanks to Coach White for the report and providing the picture of our Champions.
