Slow Start Leads to Big Finish

Coach Kunkel Keeps Konked-Out Kids Concentrating on the Competition is the headline I would have used IF I was addicted to alliteration.  But I'm not... I can quit at any time.  Anna Sponaugle, another 7th Grade Girls' Basketball star, who was sidelined with an injury answered the coach's call to report on the Wednesday's game.

On Wednesday, January 23, the 7th grade girls’ basketball team had a big win over Deer Park. The game started out low scoring with the score 3 to 2 at the end of the first quarter. At the half the Cowboys had come up with 7 more points made by Lindsay Stewart, Sydnie Shepard, and Sierra Valentine.
In the third quarter, the Cowboys displayed tremendous defense, delivered by Emma Postallian, Kaelyn Gilliam, Tricia Harmon, and Skylar Wolski. Ashley Moher and Sierra Valentine played decisive defense at point guard this game, along with Lindsay Stewart, who always courageously leads the team at both ends of the floor.
In the fourth quarter the cowboys stepped it up a notch. Emma Postallian and Skylar Wolski both had 3 points, as the Cowboys put some distance between themselves and their opponent. Lindsay Stewart and Sydnie Shepard both had 2 points this quarter, as well. At the end of the game, our Cowboys had vanquished Deer Park by the score of 19 to 10.

The Middle School Girls' teams head to Indian Hill next on Monday, January 28 starting at 4:30.

Thanks to Arch Cunningham for capturing some great shots of the game.

Court of Cowboys Defeats Deer Park's Defense

From Coach King

On Jan. 23rd, the 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team beat Deer Park 30-21. Emily Dudek led the scoring with 13 points, followed by Kayla Hampton and Lauren Metz each with 7, Isabelle Judge with 2, and Marley Manigault with 1. This win evens the record to 4-4, with the next game on January 28 at Indian Hill.
The game started off physical and low scoring. At the end of the first quarter Wyoming led 6-2. The second quarter was more of the same with the Wildcats keeping pace with the Cowboys. The halftime score was 15-9.
In the second half, the defensive battle continued. Crissy Gallick and Tatyanna Palmer increased the defensive pressure while Kelsey Lackey and Jamaiica Hurston hit the boards. The third quarter ended with a 20-14 score. Wyoming outscored Deer Park 10-7 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Two Laps around the Pool

Rutter is a Classic Champion

Junior Jonathan Rutter won both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke events over the weekend at the Southwest Ohio High School Classic meet.
The Classic is the nation's largest high school swimming meet with over 3000 swimmers. Preliminary races are conducted in 8 different sites throughout Cincinnati and Dayton with the top 16 in each event competing at Keating Natatorium each evening. It is very difficult to qualify for finals and Rutter was one of only two Wyoming swimmers to make it back in an individual event. The other was his brother, Christopher. Wyoming Men did qualify 4 relays to compete at night over the two day meet.  A Wyoming diver also made it to the finals.  Sophomore Will Courtney advanced from his 3rd place finish at his Prelim site to finish 23rd overall.
Rutter's time of 58.01 in the 100 Breast not only gave him the win, but also put him as the 3rd fastest time in Classic history (40 years). Maybe he can break the record next year (it is a 56.67). He also won the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:07.57 which is number 8 on the all-time fastest list. He needs to drop to a 2:04.18 if he wants to break that record next year.
Swimming World  magazine has a nice write up about the meet and mentions Jonathan.

Congratulations.

Cowboys Battle the Braves

Wyoming and Indian Hill met yesterday for the Crosstown Swimming Classic at Powel Crosley Jr YMCA. The Cowboy men beat the Braves, 111 to 52 while the women were defeated by almost the same score in reverse, 51 to 119 in the last home meet of the season.
Both teams were tired after coming off the SW Ohio District Classic meet that was held over the weekend. We had three dual winners yesterday - Brennan Burt won both the 50 and 100 Free events. Jonathan Rutter won the 500 Free and the 100 Breast events, and Max Chou won both the 100 Fly and 100 Back events. Stephen Barrett was the winner of the 200 Freestyle.
Both of the free relays were victorious yesterday - the Men's 200 consisted of Chou, Matthew Lethander, Barrett and Christopher Rutter. The Men's 400 team was Chou, Barrett, J. Rutter and Burt.
The last home meet is typically our senior meet and we were excited to recognize and celebrate our seniors for this year: Alex Abel, Maggie Barrett, Brennan Burt, Sam Edwards, Erin Engelhardt, Maggie Gilbert, Amelia Irvine, Matt Skidmore, Sattabut Sunan, Shawnese Warren and David Weinrich. Good luck to all of you as you finish your senior season!
The Cowboys will compete at the CHL Championships next Saturday, Feb. 2nd at Mariemont. The Men will be defending their league title for the 7th year! Good luck to all the Cowboys.

Who says the Round-Up isn't a great value.  Not only did you just get two reports for the price of one, we'll even through in a few pictures from the SWOHS Classic Diving Prelims.

Remember When - Remembered

I didn't get any "Comments", but I did get a couple of emails.  First in was WHS Swim Coach supreme, David Elliot.  Actually, we should have all been disappointed if he wasn't first.

Dear readers,
That is the 1992 Wyoming Cowboys Went on to the State Playoffs, and lost a heart breaker to C.A.P.E. 9-7 . C.A.P.E. went on to win the State Title that year. What could of been ?? #4 there was a pretty good player for us , AHMED PLUMMER of OSU & 49ers fame !! Thanks for posting, great picture !! Much Love to all my former teammates !!
Take Care,
David Elliott # 57
Wyoming Class of '93

So if you're having trouble finding him, David is in the third row from the back, second from the left.  And if you're having trouble squinting at the little picture.  Below is a better picture the Fabulous 57.

"Vermontdad" (no that's not the guy to the right of David here) also gave it a shot.  He was 1 minute behind David with his response, and 1 year too late with his guess.  He was just a little long with his guess of  '93.

Remember When

We've had a lot of Alum' News lately.  In a further effort to honor our past, bring back good memories, or maybe make us all chuckle at the goofy hairstyles of yesteryear, I present the following.

If you're still scratching your head, I'll give you a hint.  This team was the CHL champ, and went to the state playoffs.  Be the first to correctly guess (comment below) which team this is and you will win a free one-year subscription to the Round-Up.

Old Home Week

I recently asked for more alumni news, and I was richly rewarded.  I received an update on Ian Kadish ('07).  He pitched last season for the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He started the season with the Vancouver Canadians and then got promoted to the Lansing Lugnuts. Below is a Bleacher Report about his time in Vancouver. At Lansing, one of the highlights was getting the win in a game here against the Dayton Dragons. He was then rewarded with an invitation to Instructionals in Florida, and then on to Arizona Fall League, a high profile league made up of highly rated prospects where each MLB team can only send eight prospects. Ian was selected as one of the eight by Toronto. He is heading to spring training in February and waiting to see where he will start out this season.

Way to go, Ian!

And don't think for a minute that we've hit our quota of Alumni news.  We would love to keep track of our awesome athletes.

Basketball Chili Chow Down

The last time there was this much basketball talent assembled in one room... wait, has there been? The Girls' Basketball teams met up for Skyline tonight.  Our own intrepid Arch Cunningham was there to take pictures (so he says... I suspect that the Skyline was a factor as well).

Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 23rd, you have a Two-Way option to support the girls.  The High School teams travel to Indian Hill, while the Middle School teams host Deer Park.

State Cage Match

In his last report, Coach Pitman alluded to the new State Wrestling Tournament system.  No, it's not a cage match.  That was just the bait and switch to get you to read the article.  Below is an explanation of the system from the CHL website.

Wrestling is trying something new this season. For the first time, there will be a state duals tournament. This will be different then the regular state championship in that it will team oriented as opposed to the current state tourney that is individual oriented. The competition is sponsored by the state wrestling coaches association. The tournament is set up in brackets on the three division levels. Taylor and Wyoming will compete in Division II and Deer Park, Madeira, & Reading will be in Division III. To be eligible, a school must fill over half of the weight classes. Schools are then seeded. It is a one and out tourney. The first round will have matches at the number one & two seeded schools.
The Regional Quarter-Final matches will take place on Wednesday, January 23rd. Number 8 Hughes will take on #9 Taylor at Ross High School. Number 3 Eaton will take on #6 Wyoming at New Richmond High School. Reading is a #1 seed in D3 and will host Lockland. Number 3 Deer Park will take on #6 Madeira at Carlisle.

Faces From The Past Flash By

Coach Knickel sent us an update from '09 alumna Monica Fischer.  She was Miami's top finisher in the Mile Run at the Gladstein Invite in Bloomington, Indiana on Janary 18th.  Way to go, Monica!

Keep these alumni stories coming.

Tag Teaming at the Wyoming Duals

Did you see the Tri-County Press last week?  Margaret "The Grappler" Gallick has been absolutely tearing it up as the team photographer for the Matmen.  And you know you have a strong bench when Rod Apfelbeck is your second-string photographer.  He sent in some additional shots from the Wyoming Duals held here at home on January 19th, where they came in 2nd place.

You can shake him all you want, there just isn't any place to hide milk money in a singlet.

Check out the series of pictures leading up to this moment for Cedric Simmons.  It almost makes you feel sorry for Loveland.

The following is a series of pictures showing some of Matmen giving their best Statue of Liberty pose.

Thanks again to "Rasslin" Rod Apfelbeck for these punchy pictures.
