Middle School Wrestling Team Starts 2013 Strong

From Middle School Wrestling Coach, Dell Grunenburg:

With the holidays behind us, the Middle School wrestling team now begins the heart of its schedule this season. The team, enjoying the most number of student-athletes on the team in years, has already participated in the Summit Country Day tournament, the Oak Hills Duals tournament and tri-meets with Reading/Mason and Summit/CHCA. As well, scrimmages with powerhouses Lakota West and Fairfield have helped the Cowboys get into fighting shape for the event-packed month of January.
To start the new year off, the Cowboys took 2nd Place at the Williamsburg Duals Tournament, finishing with a 4-1 dual meet record. The final round was a hard fought dual against Reading which came down to the final two matches for the championship. Team members leading the charge for the second place trophy include Ben Padnos, Zach Van Fossen, Robbie Trapp, Ethan Tefs, Jacob Hancock, Yima Nyamor, Elijah Kemper, Max Frankel, Joseph Glisson, Noah Pitman, Dylan Revis. Additional teams members include Carl Baker, William Kellner, Rafael Rodriguez, Micah Unzueta, McKenna Dorsey and Grace Furlong.
The Cowboys’ season continues with remaining tournaments at Hamilton (1/19) and Bethel-Tate (1/26), as well as tri-meets with Oak Hills/Harrison and New Richmond/White Oak. The season will conclude with a CHL Open Tournament in early February.

Great job, team, and great job, coach!

Thanks to Coach Grunenberg for the report and the picture.

We Asked, You Answered

We recently posted a question from a '75 alum.  He asked what the official school logo was.  The official logo is the horseshoe with the "W" inside.  Thanks to everyone who responded.

Hopefully, the reason for his question wasn't some unease over an ill-considered tattoo ordered after the euphoria of the Cowboy's 1977 victory at the State Championship game under the legendary Coach Lewis.

Just because it looks like a "W" to him as he looks down at his arm doesn't make it right.

This Week in the TCP

This week in the TCP you will find a look back at 2012 with photos of several Wyoming athletes.  Pictures are Haley Thoresen, Natalie Burchard, Max Kadish, Corbin Guggenheim, Emily Stites, and Clara Rodrigue.

HERE is a link to the Tri-County Press

As a bonus, Cincinnati.com also has the same year in review photo gallery posted.  I haven't had time to look all the way through to see if there are any additional Wyoming athletes featured there.

Middletown Christians Can't Catch the Cowboys

As promised, I have some of the stats from the Varsity Boys' Basketball December 29th 84-55 whomping of Middletown Christian.

Besides his 13 rebounds, Mark Akinbi was 9 for 10 (and 5-9 in freethrows) for an awesome 23 points.  Ahmed Frost put in 15 points to compliment his 4 steals.  Will Marty put in 13 points with three of those coming from one of two shots from beyond the three point line.  Besides his 9 rebounds, Ben Kurtz followed right behind with 12 points (also going one for two in three pointers).  Dawson Rogers finished up with 7 points (one for three in three pointers).  Off the Bench, Walker Lewis scored 9 points.  Nolan Prevish and Mason Rogers brought in 2 points each followed by Duke Brunk who scored a point from the free throw line.  As a team, they were 31 for 63 in Field Goals, 3 for 10 in Three Pointers, and 19-31 in Free Throws.  They also nabbed 42 rebounds, split right down the middle between offensive and defensive.

On Friday, January 4th, next up (or should we say down) is Reading, where the boys will finish up their road trip with a 7:30 tip-off.  Let's turn out and support the boys at their last away game before they come home for a week of action against Finneytown and Maderia.

Dayton Belmont Gets Rung

On Friday, December 28th, the Varsity Boys' Basketball team found themselves on the road again.  This time they were were hosted by Dayton Belmont, where they just barely squeaked by with a 73 to 54 victory.  Will Marty and Mark Akinbi both went 6 for 8 with 18 points.  Ben Kurtz put up 15 and had 16 rebounds (almost half of the teams 38 rebounds).  Ahmed Frost scored 12 points with 7 assists followed close behind by Nolan Prevish who had 8.  Walker Lewis finished up the scoring with 2.  Not to be left out, Ian Toerner and the Rogers trio (Dawson, Hudson, and Mason) all contributed rebounds and or assists.  This score was a foreshadowing of scores to come as they traveled to meet Middletown Christian on Saturday, December 29th.  While there, the Cowboys racked up a devastating 84-55 victory.  We will post more stats if they become available.  There must have been some great highlight moments in that game, and we would love to post more than stats, so send us those stories!

Don't BE a Turkey, WRITE About One

My last post about Wyoming athletes in the TCP mentioned the Girls' Bowling team.  We here at the Round-Up have been bowling fans ever since Homer and the Pin Pals won the championship back in 1996. We would love to highlight the accomplishments of our own bowlers who stand out brighter than a head polished in the SHINE-O BALL-O. If you are a Wyoming bowler or love someone who is, send us a quick summary of or the highlights from a match and we will post them for all to see.

This Week in the TCP

This week in the Tri-County Press you will find articles about two Wyoming Alumni, Celia Oberholzer ('11) and her recent accomplishments at Kenyon College, and Michelle Jolson ('12) and her great start at Brown University.  You will also find mentions of the Boys' Basketball win over Lockland on the 15th, and the Girls' Bowling loss to Ursaline on the 18th.
