Wyoming’s varsity Ultimate team, the Jackrabbits, extended their undefeated start of the season to 5-0 with a not-as-close-as-it-looks 7-6 win over Milford on yet another windy day at the Rec Center. The strong wind caused very long points, and Wyoming recovered from a 0-2 initial deficit to take a 7-4 lead as time was running out, thanks to a stout zone D, and coasted to the win. Senior Blake Wickstrom led the way with three scoring throws and a goal catch, while sophomore Arthur Cilley had two scoring throws and two goal catches and junior Joe White had two scoring throws and a goal catch. The varsity will be back in action Sunday at the Rec Center at 4:45 against equally undefeated Taylor, which is coached by Wyoming graduate and former Jackrabbits standout, Eric Reichwein.
But the big news in Wyoming Ultimate is that the boys played in the Ohio state qualification tournament this weekend for the first time in the 16 year history of the program and finished third to qualify for the 8-team state tournament May 9-10 in Versailles. Despite coming into the qualification tournament as the #7 seed, and playing with just 10 players on a cold, rainy and miserable day, Wyoming defeated Moeller and Lakota to make it to the semi-finals and, after losing to eventual champion Holy Family Catholic, defeated Lebanon 11-10 on a long goal catch on “Universe Point” (the final point in a time-capped, tie game) by junior Joe White. Joe led the team with 17 scoring throws and eight goal catches in the five tournament games. Seniors Evan Emanuelson had four goal catches, Blake Wickstrom had three and Abe Wicksrom had one scoring throw and two goal catches. Sophomore Arthur Cilley had two scoring throws and three goal catches, and juniors Gus Bradley had one and three, Jaden Shapiro two and one, and Quin Wolfer one scoring throw. The team is looking forward to representing Wyoming Ultimate at the State tourney in two weeks!
Thanks to Coach White for the report.
