Jon Unger, WHS '88, Ohio Division III Boys' Soccer Coach of the Year

Jon Unger, Wyoming High School Class of 1988, is the boys' soccer head coach at Madeira.  He was recently named CHL Co-Coach of the Year, Southwest District Coach of the Year, and Ohio Division III Coach of the Year.


Wyoming boys' soccer head coach Steve Thomas had this to say about Coach Unger:

I consider Jon to be a friend and he is one of the best high school coaches in our state. His record speaks for itself. He coaches his players in the right way and always demonstrates the highest form of sportsmanship and integrity.
We wish Jon continued success...except for one game each year.

Boys' bowling loses to Oak Hills

The boys' bowling team lost to Oak Hills yesterday at Western Bowl 2681-1994.

High series were Gourley (O) 425 and Brown (W) 417.

Girls' bowling loses to Oak Hills

The girls' bowling team dropped its match last night to Oak Hills 1993-1622, moving its record to 1-1.

High series were Reiman (O) 319 and Viacava (W) 265.

Girls' swimming defeats Clark Monessori

The girls' swimming team defeated Clark Montessori at Powel Crosley Y yesterday 93-74 to open its season.

The boys' swimming team opened its season with a victory over Clark Montessori by the score 119-36.

Terry Davis first team, Max Kadish special mention All-State

Six foot four inch, 305 pound senior offensive lineman Terry Davis has been selected to the Associated Press All-Ohio First Team for Division III.  Terry has committed to play football at North Carolina State.

Five foot nine inch, 165 pound senior defensive back/wideout Max Kadish has been selected Special Mention.  Max has committed to play baseball at Furman.

Dr. David E. Taylor

The Wyoming Athletic Department and Student-Athletes would like to thank Dr. David Taylor for his 15 years of dedicated service. A plaque of appreciation was presented to Dr. Taylor by the Athletic Department.

Girls' basketball loses opener


The girls' basketball team lost its opener last night to #1 ranked Badin, 49-32.


Michelle Jolson led the scoring with 16 points.


Marta Stewart had eight, Clara Rodrigue four, and Mary Tess Irvine and Morgan Cunningham two each.



Badin showed great respect for the girls, full-court pressing until the final horn.



Next up: Saturday at North College Hill, JV at Noon, Varsity at 1:30.

A couple of notes from Varsity Wrestling Head Coach Brian Pitman:

The Middle School Wrestling team is still allowing 7th and 8th graders to join the wrestling team. Currently the Cowboy Wrestlers have 15 on their squad. Practices are at the High School and begin at 3:30.

The high school wrestling team will have an in-school wrestling meet at home at 2:20 on December 2 against CHCA. Please stop by and watch the Cowboys begin their season off strong!

CHL All Sports Trophy

Wyoming is in 2nd place for the Cincinnati Hills League All Sports Trophy after the fall season.  We trail Indian Hill by 7 points.

Points are assigned by final standings in each sport - first place gets you nine points, second is seven, third six, and on down to 1 for eighth (assuming all eight schools partipate in that sport).
The trophy was established in 2000. Here are the winners by year:

CHL boys' basketball preview

From today's Enquirer:
Wyoming

Coach: Tony Gentry (167-98)

Last year: 12-9 (7-7)

What's new: Senior AJ Tribble joins the team.

Key Players: Senior guard Adam Crider, sophomore guard Ahmad Frost, junior guard Ben Kurtz, senior forward Rich Irwin

Outlook: Frost and Kurtz are the only returning starters, and are two of only three Cowboys with varsity experience.

"We have three players with varsity experience and a senior newcomer, so we are extremely young with five varsity sophomores," Gentry said.

Kurtz scored 4.0 points and grabbed 2.5 rebounds per game last season. Frost added 3.6 points. Crider scored 6.4 points off the bench.

Senior guard Chris Campbell, who averaged 10 points and 3.9 assists per game, will be out until late in the season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament playing football, but will be a team captain.

Concussion management program

Wyoming High School is pleased to announce its participation in a new Sports Concussion Management Program.

Thanks to a partnership with Group Health Associates and TriHealth, Wyoming student-athletes will have access to the Heads Count Sports Concussion Management Program. The Heads Count program focuses on student-athletes and the impact concussions can have on them, now and into the future.

With the Heads Count program (www.headscount.org), Board-certified physiatrists (experts in physical medicine and injury rehabilitation) are available to help provide a structured process for a safe return to play.

Led by Group Health Associates physiatrists Sanjiv Lakhia and TriHealth Sports Medicine manager Greg Lynn, Heads Count is the most comprehensive program to address sports-related concussions in the Cincinnati area.

Wyoming will be led by seniors Pat Dierker and Eric Lethander. They were each on the 200 free (third) and 400 free (second) relay teams. Dierker was a finalist in the 100 free, while Lethander was a finalist in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM.

Southwest Ohio HS Senior All-Star Game


The Steven A. Cummins Memorial Southwest Ohio High School Soccer 2011 Senior All-Star Game was held last night at a Princeton Stadium that was much colder than it was Tuesday night.


Wyoming All-Stars were seniors Michelle Jolson and Meghan McAllister and junior Sarah Deutsch.  Only seniors were eligible to play in the game.


The format was the same as for the boys on Tuesday - 40 minutes of Division II vs. III, then 40 of Division I vs. Division II, then I vs. III.


Besides the cold, the girls had to face up to the challenge of no lights on the south side of the stadium for a good part of the first period.

Coach: Travis Glendenning (First season)

Last year: 19-4 (12-2)

What’s new: Glendenning replaces Angie Edmonds after Edmonds spent six seasons coaching the Cowboys.

Key players: Senior guard Michelle Jolson, senior guard Clara Rodrigue and senior guard Mary Tess Irvine.

Outlook: With all-state guard, last season’s leading scorer and current Miami Redhawk Nikki McKee gone, a trio of seniors in the backcourt will be the key to the Cowboys’ season. Jolson is the top returning scorer and rebounder with 7.7 points and 3.8 rebounds per game last season to go with a team-best 2.8 assists. Irvine added 4.4 points and 2.4 rebounds and Rodrigue scored 2.9 points, grabbed 3.4 rebounds and handed out 2.4 assists.

“We hope to rely on the experience of a large senior class this year,” Glendenning said.

Kamphaus, Dewitt, Glover honored at All-Star Game

The Steven A. Cummins Memorial Southwest Ohio High School Soccer 2011 Senior All-Star Game was held last night at Princeton.


Before the "game", the Division I, II and III All Southwest All-Stars were honored.  For Wyoming, the honorees were seniors Nick Kamphaus and Jason Dewitt and junior Harrison Glover.


The "game" was 40 minutes of the Division II senior All-Stars vs. the Division III All-Stars, 40 minutes of Division I vs. II, and finally forty of I vs. III.


Jason was unable to play due to injury, Harrison due to being a junior.  Nick led the Division II team to a 2-1 victory over Division III.


The girls' all-star game is tonight at Princeton at 7 PM.

Wyoming Youth Football teams have great success

I received the following from the Wyoming Youth Football Association:

Wyoming Youth Football Association's football teams won four out of the six Southern Ohio Youth Football Association's, Southern Division, Superbowls they played in on Saturday, 11/12/11. All WYFA teams made the playoffs and advanced to the divisional championship games for their age groups.

The five/six year old team, led by Head Coach Lonnie Grayson, and the ten year old team, led by Head Coach Tim Marty, won their very first SOYFAI Superbowl Championships last weekend.

Additionally, the seven year old team led by Head Coach Rodney Harris, and the nine year old team, led by Head Coach Guy O'Gara, won their second straight SOYFAI Superbowl Championships.

The eight year old team, led by Head Coach Bryan Richardson, and the eleven year old team, led by Head Coach Kevin O'Brien lost tough championship games.

The five/six and seven year old teams beat the Deer Park Lil Cats in blowout fashion. The nine and ten year old teams downed Reading teams for an even sweeter victory.

Emily Fraik named First Team All-State Volleyball

Senior Emily Fraik has been named First Team All State for Division II by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches' Association.

Sophomore Jessica Leish was named Second Team.

Junior Tatiyana Ali was named Honorable Mention.

All-Southwest Ohio Boys' Soccer All-Star Team

Nick Kamphaus, Jason Dewitt and Harrison Glover have been named to the All-Southwest Ohio Boys' Soccer All-Star Team.

Nick will be playing in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, November 15th at 7 PM at Princeton High School.  Jason is still hurt and hence won't be playing.  Harrison is a junior and therefore won't be playing.

All-Southwest Ohio Girls' Soccer All-Star Team

Michelle Jolson, Meghan McAllister and Sarah Deutsch have been named to the All-Southwest Ohio Girls' Soccer All-Star Team.

Michelle and Meghan will be playing in the All-Star Game on Wednesday, November 16th at 7 PM at Princeton High School.  As a junior Sarah isn't eligible to play.

Boys' Cross Country team finishes 12th at state


The boys' cross country team finished 12th in Division II at the Ohio High School Athletic Association state meet held Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.



The team was just one point behind 11th place Dayton Oakwood.

Booster meeting reminder

Just a reminder that the next Booster meeting is Tuesday night at 7 PM at the HS Media Center.

Emily Stites sixth at State Cross Country Meet


Emily Stites finished sixth in the state at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II Cross Country Championships held yesterday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Ohio.

In Division II, Wyoming senior Emily Stites finished sixth (18:31.91) and Indian Hill senior Elizabeth Heinbach was seventh (18:32.41) behind champion Sarra Taylor of London (18:19.14). Also finishing among the top 25 was Indian Hill sophomore Elena Horton (19th, 19:15.34).

“I was hoping to finish in the top five, but at the end of the day it was my last race and I’m happy to accomplish the things that I did,” Stites said. “I couldn’t be happier with the way I ran overall.”

Volleyball team loses to Alter




The volleyball team lost to Alter last night at Wilmington 23-25, 30-28, 25-17, 18-25, 11-15.


They end the season 26-1. 


Twenty-six is the most wins ever for a Wyoming volleyball team.
