The following is the text from a Scott Springer article found at Cincinnati.com about our Girls' Varsity Tennis Team.

WYOMING — The young women who wield tennis racquets for Wyoming High School would like to accomplish something that hasn’t been done in 10 years.
In 2003, Wyoming held a share of the Cincinnati Hills League championship with Mariemont and Indian Hill. In every other year since many of the girls were born (1997), the title went through Indian Hill.
That much hasn’t changed.
“I think Indian Hill’s the biggest competition we’ve got,” new Wyoming coach Michael Kindred said. “They’re always there. They have a bunch of returning players too. It’s going to be tough.”
Kindred most recently helped coached the highly successful boys in Mason and has inherited a talented group of girls who routinely gather behind Spring Valley Bank at the Cowboys home courts.
Junior Haley Thoresen won her opening round at the state tournament last year and is steady at No. 1 singles.
“She’s very talented,” Kindred said. “She had a good win over Mason, a good Division I school recently in two close sets. She’s a grinder. She hits the ball hard from both sides and has a great serve.”
After Thoresen, senior Maddie Boster is at No. 2 singles. Her younger sisters, Annie and Ellen often trade off at No. 3 singles.
Junior Rachel Berg and senior Ellen Koesterman are at first doubles with great aspirations this year after another year together. Two years ago, at No. 2 doubles, they were undefeated.
“They’re a real good team,” Kindred said. “We expect them to go to state also this year. Rachel Berg is the sister of Ashley Berg, who played for us last year.”
Rounding out Wyoming’s lineup are Camille Wilson and Marie Lippert at No. 2 doubles.
Outside of the CHL schedule, the Cowboys haven’t shied away from anyone. On this year’s menu already has been Princeton, Mason, Columbus Academy and Lakota West. Loveland, Sycamore, CHCA and CCD are on the horizon.
“Our goal’s to schedule good competition,” assistant Tom Tobias said. “We’re not looking to be an undefeated team. We’re looking long term. We’re looking to play the best teams, so we play Division I teams.”
Next up for Kindred’s crew are two of those DI teams. Loveland looks to deposit some shots on the Spring Valley Bank courts Sept. 5, with the Lady Aves of Sycamore trying to cash in Sept. 9.
“It’s a great bunch of girls and they really have fun,” Kindred said.

A Tough Day for Tennis

Coach Hoppenjans filed a report from the JV Tennis match against Loveland.
There were a lot of tough lessons learned by our JV team on Thursday’s (August 29) match against Loveland. While our girls fought hard, Loveland took all courts in the end. Loveland has mostly Juniors, while we have mostly Freshman and Sophmores, so they better watch out next year!
Playing Singles: Annie Boster, Rachael Carter, Marcella Domka
Playing Doubles: Marika Shoger & Molly Izenson, Emily Lagaly & Sadie Darwish, Reily Boss & Paige Arenas, Kalyxa Roman & Sydney Barth

Golf Gone Wild

Coach Crider is looking ahead to post-season play for the Boy's Golf team.  The following is from a leaked email detailing what we can expect in the coming weeks.
As hard as it may seem to believe, the regular season for Boys Varsity Golf is now halfway completed for Fall 2013. We’ve reached the halfway mark of the season with a very strong record of 12 – 1 overall, and undefeated in the CHL.  ...We are pushing the boys to think beyond simply winning the CHL...  Instead, we are striving to keep the boys focused on not just getting to Columbus for the State Championship, but to actually contend for the title. Yes, I REALLY do believe the team is that good, when they are focused.
We will likely have another difficult battle getting out of Districts this year. Oakwood is very strong, Kettering Alter has another good team, as is Dayton Chaminade. Plus, the only team to beat us this year is Middletown Fenwick, and they are in our District as well. We will continue to try and keep the boys focused on the ultimate prize, while getting a little bit better each day.
The tough District situation sounds like a call to action.  We need to make sure we turn out and give the Boys our support at these matches... at least as much wild, crazy support you can give at golf match.

Cowboys Take Mustangs for a Ride

Deb Varland pulled double-duty at the Boys' Varsity Soccer game gainst Madeira on Tuesday, August 27th.  Besides her usual great pictures, she also sent in the following report.

Boys had a good game against Madeira with a 4-1 win. Madiera was the first to score with an own goal putting Wyoming on the board. Andy Renggli connected to Nolan Prevish for a header for the second goal. The third goal started with a cross from Ryan Derge to Drew Wayman who had control in the box and finished with a nice pass into the corner net. Our final goal was from Jay Klein with a break away, a shot to the keeper that came back to him and Jay volleyed it in.
Thanks to Deb Varland for the report and the sweet pictures.

Cowboys Heads Above Madeira

Bob Carter gave us the good word from the Boys' JV soccer game versus Madeira.
The Boys JV soccer team took on CHL rival Madeira at home on a recent hot and humid Tuesday (8-27-13).
Typical of the JV season, the Cowboys scored first, and in the first 6 minutes of the game. After that, the rest of the half was a back and forth effort, without any scoring due to several great saves by goalies from both teams. The Cowboys extended their lead with a second goal midway through the second half, and the defense teamed up to hold on to the shut out.
The final score: Wyoming 2, Madeira 0!
This brings the record for the JV team to 3-0-1.
Next up for the JV soccer team is big D1 power Moeller (away) on Thursday (8-29-13).
Let's make sure we turn out to help our JV Boys' hold on to their undefeated season.
Thanks to Bob Carter for the great report and pictures.

The girls open up league play on Wednesday at Madeira at 7pm - come out and support the Cowboys!

There's likely going to be a lot more of this (below) going on.

    Cowboys' Monster Win

Jen Hays sent us the good word from the Saturday, August 24th Varsity Boys; Soccer match.

The Wyoming Men’s Varsity Soccer team played Purcell Marion on Saturday afternoon at home. The day proved to be very successful for the Cowboys. The first half contained goals scored by Jay Klein, Andy Rengli, Jarod Heidotting, and Drew Wayman all within the first 20 minutes. The Cowboys allowed Purcell Marion to get one penalty kick goal, but that was it. Ivan Meisner ended the first half with a goal, and then began the second half with a goal. And Jay Klein, cemented the win for the Cowboys, by scoring one last goal on a penalty kick. The final score was Wyoming 7, Purcell Marion 1

    Before They Were Famous

Middle School Cross Country opens its season at Harbin Park in Fairfield on Wednesday, August 28th.

    Race Times:
         4:30: 7th grade boys’ team
         5:00: 7th grade girls’ team
         5:30: 8th grade boys’ team
         6:00: 8th grade girls’ team

No one wants to be accused of jumping on the bandwagon.  I'd suggest coming out to cheer these kids on so that when they make it to High School and start breaking records (see our  previous post from the High School Cross Country's season opener) you'll be able to say that you've been a fan from way back.

    Record Breakers Under the Lights

Saturday, August 24th, the Cross Country team opened their season at the Centerville Saturday Night Lights event.  Coach Glendenning sent us a report and we have copied the text from the Run Wyoming Blog below.

We got off to a really nice start against almost exclusively D1 competition.  Based on my research it appears this is the first time in school history that 3 boys ran faster than 16:50 in the same 5k race.  If a sage veteran of the Wyoming running community has evidence to the contrary it would be great to have for my record books.

Below is from the Run Wyoming Blog.
Full results from last night's races are available at Finish Timing.

The Varsity Girls finished 12th out of 23 teams (2nd among DII teams), led by Katie Spray's career best time of 21:04.

Our boys followed up with a 7th place finish (1st among DII teams) as Ben Stites, Max Hoffman, and Ian Goertzen all ran sub-17 minute times.  The boys individual record page has been updated with 3 new entries in our school's all-time top 20.

Thanks to everyone for a fantastic first race.  From solid times to great organization and effort among our athletes it was an outstanding way to start the season!

Next: @ Greenville Treaty City Invitational, 8/31

    Are You Ready?

Can you hardly stand it... Only one more week until the Football home opener against Aiken.  Until then, the team whet our appetite with a scrimmage against CHCA here at home on Friday, August 23rd.
It was a great start for the team with the 35-28 victory.
Make sure you make it out next Friday, August 30, when the Bernie Barre Field will be dedicated at Bob Lewis Stadium.  Former players are invited to a reception at 6:15 in the cafeteria.
Thanks to Rod Apfelbeck for these great shots.

    Anderson Blanked by Cowboys

Jen Hays delivered the good word to us about the Boys' Varsity Soccer team.
The Wyoming Men’s Varsity soccer team took on Anderson for their home opener on Thursday (August 22), and did Wyoming proud.
The first half was dominated by Wyoming with another score on a penalty kick from Toby Varland, who assisted in the second goal as well, with a corner kick to Ryan Derge for the header!
The Cowboys kept it up for the second half with one more goal by Drew Wayman with a lovely chip over the goalies head and in the net!
Saturday (August 24), the Varsity takes on Purcell-Marion at home at 1:00 pm.   It’s a Saturday, game is in Wyoming, come on out and cheer the guys on!
    Go Cowboys!
