Aaron Hancock named new Varsity Football Head Coach

Press Release dated February 27th:

AARON HANCOCK TO LEAD THE
WYOMING COWBOYS FOOTBALL TEAM

WYOMING, OH – At tonight’s regular Board Meeting, the Wyoming Board of Education unanimously approved the hiring of Aaron Hancock as the Head Football Coach of the Wyoming Cowboys. Aaron replaces legendary Head Coach Bernie Barre who announced that he will be retiring from education at the conclusion of the 2012 school year.

“I am pleased to announce the Board of Education has appointed Aaron Hancock as Head Football Coach of Wyoming High School to succeed Bernie Barre who will be retiring in July,” stated Dr. Susan Lang, Superintendent. “A seven member interview committee comprised of parents, staff, administration and a Board member recommended him from over 56 applicants from 11 different States. As a teacher in the building for the past 11 years, Aaron is dedicated to each and every student and has encouraged their talents. Not only is he knowledgeable and passionate about football, his excellence as a teacher as well as a coach has earned respect from students, parents, colleagues, and community members. He understands and appreciates the tradition of Wyoming football and will work hard to continue the success of the program.”

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead the Wyoming Cowboys and the future of this Program.” said Coach Hancock. “I understand the long lasting tradition of Wyoming Football and look forward to our future success”

Coach Hancock has been part of the Wyoming football family for the past 11 years. He has served as the Defensive Coordinator the past four seasons. During his time on the staff, the Program has won five Conference Championships, had an undefeated season and won a Regional Championship. In 2001, Aaron began teaching at Wyoming and through his career has coached football and wrestling. He has also been the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the past six years.

“I am very excited about Aaron being our head football coach” said Wyoming Athletic Director Scott Kaufman. “Aaron possesses everything we were looking for in a head coach— he is a strong leader in the building and in the community and he has a great knowledge and passion for the game of football. There is no doubt he will be able to effectively build upon the strong foundation created by past Head Coaches Bernie Barre, Gary Jump and Bob Lewis.”

Wrestlers 13th at Districts; Nyamor, Guggenheim qualify for state

The wrestling team finished 13th at the Southwest District tournament over the weekend at Goshen. It
is their best finish ever in Division II and the best finish in any division since 1991 when they finished 10th.

Three wrestlers placed for the Cowboys. Mikey Gonzalez finished in 6th place. Corbin Guggenheim qualified for the state tournament with a 4th place finish. Aluor Nyamor also qualified for state, finishing in 3rd place. Wyoming has not taken two wrestlers to the state tournament since the 1978-1979 season when Bryn Irvine and Cliff Chang qualified.

Some individual accomplishments took place over the weekend as well. Corbin Guggenheim and Adam Blum each reached 90 career wins. Aluor Nyamor recorded his 60th career win. Mikey Gonzalez moved into second all time reaching 100 wins. He leaves Wyoming with 101 career wins.

The state tournament begins at 4:15 on Thursday at Schottenstein Center at Ohio State.

Coach Gentry stepping down

Got this note from boys' basketball head coach Tony Gentry:

I resigned as head coach on Thursday but will finish the season out. I'm ready to accept another challenge and spend more time with my family.

I had 19 great years (13 as head coach) at Wyoming and I'm thrilled to have been able to coach at my alma mater and be successful. We as a staff won our 170th game Friday night against 117 losses and I'm leaving as the all time winningest boys basketball coach in Wyoming history.

I want to thank my staff, especially Ted Stewart, Fred Tudor, Keith Jordan, Darrell Brockman, Jeff Davis and Chad Gronas for making our program a class act through the years. I also wish to thank former AD Jim Barre and former principal Ken Baker for having enough faith in me to be a head coach.

Best of luck to Wyoming City Schools and GO COWBOYS!

Oops

In a recent post (since corrected), I wrote that "Ahmad Plummer" was the leading scorer in Friday's game against Taylor.  Of course Ahmed Plummer is a Wyoming Hall of Fame member, but as a Class of '95er, is way past his eligibility.

In fact, Ahmad Frost was the leading scorer:

Thanks to Coach Barre for bringing this to my attention.

Boys' basketball defeats Taylor

The boys' basketball team beat Taylor last night 47-37 at home to wrap up the regular season.

Before the game the senior cheerleaders and basketball players were recognized.  Per tradition, the starting lineup was all seniors.

Jerry Campbell standing in for injured son Chris, who is with the strings in Orlando.

Ahmad Frost led all scorers with 12.  AJ Tribble and Aquil Frost had seven a piece.  Griffin O'Gara contributed six points.  Adam Crider added five. Marc Akinbi had four and Dawson Rogers and Chris Bucher added three each.

Next up: OHSAA tournament against Taft at Mason on Saturday, February 25th at 3:30 PM.

Photo gallery here.

Please see a picture of the JV team below.  They defeated Taylor last night as well, by the eerily similar score of 47-27.

The many moves of Coach Gentry

The many moves, sideline that is, of Coach Gentry, as observed at last night's Taylor game.

The "Palms Up" - this actually came from Coach Munlin (Wyoming Track & Field).  The Palms Up comes in four varieties:

1 - General:

2 - The Scorer's Table:

3 - The ref (low):

4 - The ref (high):

The "Stalking", sometimes known as "Don't make me come out there":

The "Pointing" - Apparently Richie Irwin has been paying attention to this move.  They announced before the game that he will soon be a West Pointer.

The "Play Calling":

The "Keepin' 'em loose":

The "Dougie": Coach Gentry does not employ the Dougie - at least not on the basketball court.
