Boys lacrosse beats Bishop Fenwick 17-9

From our intrepid lax stringer:

Coach Hughes finished the final offensive briefing to the attack and midfield lines as Coach Porter provided words of wisdom to the long pole defensemen. Hughes then huddled the entire team as they all raise their sticks high in the air, “Ground Balls on three. One, two, three” (in energetic unison) GROUND BALLS!!! and the Wyoming Cowboys take the field at Bishop Fenwick.

This was another great night for High School Boys Lacrosse and another win for the Cowboys. The final score was 17 to 9. At the end of the first period Fenwick was ahead by a goal 4 to 3 and at half time the Cowboys tied it up five all. During the second half the Cowboys picked up their offensive game to score twelve goals, six in the third period and six in the fourth period. Fenwick score two goals in the third and two in the fourth with a final 17 to 9 win for Wyoming. The arena for the game was a grass field marked and lined just for lacrosse. Thanks to the coaches and referees for a well played game.

Tyler Hughes (#22) was the top shooter for the evening with five goals scored. His fellow attackman, Daniel Leish (#5) and Austin Hughes (temporarily #4 on the road, #1 at home) scored four goals a piece to put the game out of Bishop Fenwick’s reach. Senior Captain James Edwards led the team with 4 assists and also scored two goals and three ground balls controlled. Tyler Cornelius (#44) took twenty-one faceoffs during the game winning 70% (15) of the attempts. Cornelius also had the highest ground balls controlled with seven. Coach Hughes instills in the players “lacrosse is a game of possession and winning grounds balls wins games.” With the GROUND BALL charge at the beginning of the game, after every time out, and beginning every period, everybody steps up to keep the ball off the ground. Other significant ground balls warriors include Harry Meisner (#49), James Edwards (#3), Nik Kamphaus (#15), and defenseman John Colton (#33). The gate keeper, the Cowboys goalie, Michael Sagan (#27) played an outstanding game with thirteen saved goals and twenty-three clears.

At the conclusion of the game the team huddles again to recognize the other team with sticks held high “Rah, rah, Fenwick!” and everyone walks the line shaking hands, thankful for the good game and sportsmanship. Coach Hughes and Porter huddle the team for final guidance and instructions for the next day’s practice but before the team leaves the field … “On three … One, two, three GROUND BALLS!!!
Next up: next Wednesday the 28th at home vs. Indian Hill, JV at 5, Varsity at 7
