Last night's report from our lacrosse man in the field:
The Wyoming Cowboys traveled to St. Xavier's home field this evening. The threat of rain and potential thunderstorms turn out to be an excellent night for lacrosse. The Cowboys came out in the first period ready to play and scored three goals allowing the Bombers only one goal. In the second period Wyoming repeated the three goal run and St. X scored two goals bringing the half-time score to Wyoming six, St. Xavier three. The second half only produced two goals for Wyoming and one goal for St. X. Both teams honored the game with excellent sportsmanship and a competitive spirit.
The Captains for the Wyoming Cowboys, Matt Fisher, Harry Meisner, and James Edwards, led the way keeping the team focused and disciplined throughout the game. Harry and James each scored goals in the game and Matt rallied the defensive play to hold the Bombers to four goals. Six of the offensive goals came from the Hughes brothers, Tyler and Austin, three goals each.
Cowboy’s goalie, Michael Sagan, in an outstanding demonstration of skill and ability, had eighteen goalie saves on the night. The Bombers had four man up situations and Sagan denied goals during all four.
One of the deciding factors of the game was the number of loose balls controlled by each team. The Cowboys had sixty-four ground balls controlled to the Bombers twenty-six. Of the sixty-four, Tyler Hughes had ten, Harrison Wood had nine, and Nik Kamphaus had eight. Other significant contributors to picking up loose balls included Austin Hughes, James Edwards, Daniel Leish, Matt Fisher, Travis Courtney, Will Irwin, John Colton, Tommy Campbell, and Harry Meisner.
Coaches Keith Hughes and Barry Porter had good practices this week and orchestrated the right mixture of offense and defensive play for an exciting and fast paced game.
Next week the Cowboy’s host two home games against Kings Wednesday, May 12th and Lakota East Friday, May 14th. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 PM at Lewis Stadium. Join the Wyoming LAX team next week for what will be two great games.
