Third at State!

From Coach White

The Wyoming Ultimate team boys participated in the State tournament for the first time in School history this year, finishing third in the regional tournament in April to qualify for the two-day, eight team tournament.  The small squad of 10 boys from Wyoming picked up three players from Clark Montessori (tournament rules allow schools to add up to three non-school players who do not attend a team participating in the tournament), and knocked off Bishop Hartley and Columbus Alternative High School to reach the semi-finals, fell to eventual champion Holy Family Catholic, and then beat a tough Kenston team from Cleveland, 13-10, to claim third place in their sixth game of the weekend. Junior Joe White anchored the back of a stingy zone defense in windy Versailles, and led the team, dubbed WyoClark, with 18 scoring throws and nine goal catches on the weekend, while junior Max Brady had 11 goals caught and one scoring throw.   Juniors Brady, Gus Bradley, and Quin Wolfer, and senior Evan Emanuelson, Michael Spurling and Abe and Blake Wickstrom did most of the running downfield on offense and defense, and Abe had the highlight of the weekend—intercepting a pass in the end zone for a defensive goal, known as a Callahan.  Abe’s key play sparked the turnaround in the Bishop Hartley game, in which WyoClark turned a 6-5 nailbiter into a 12-7 runaway following his amazing play.  Junior Jaden Shapiro and sophomore Arthur Cilley provided strong defense in the middle of the zone and solid handling skills on offense.

It was quite a thrill watching the team attain a third place finish, as all seven other teams in the tournament play year-round.  WyoClark turned a lot of heads with its high quality, spirited play, and the boys were all smiles after their last game!

Congratulations to the team, and
Thanks to Coach White for the report and the picture.
