Bounced by the Braves

Friday, April 25th, the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team hosted Indian Hill.  The home team came up a little short at the end (6-12).  It wasn't for lack of trying as it took two top-tier photographers to keep up with the action.

Short-Handed? No Problem

From Coach White

Exciting day today (Sunday, April 27th)  on the Ultimate pitch!

Wyoming’s Varsity and Reserve Ultimate teams, the Jackrabbits, each scored dramatic 11-10 victories on Sunday, despite playing short-handed.  League rules require teams to play with at least two girls on the field; the day after prom only saw one Wyoming girl make it out for the games, freshman Annmarie Spurling, who played every point of both games, but leaving the Jackrabbits playing six against seven.

The varsity jumped out to a 7-3 halftime lead, but tired down the stretch to go down 9-10, before scoring the final two goals to pull out the 11-10 win over Oak Hills, extending their win streak to three and their record to 4-2.  Senior Sam White led the way with five scoring throws, including the game winner to his brother, sophomore Joe White, who had two scoring throws and three goal catches, along with strong defense at the back of the Jackrabbits zone.  Senior Alex Kellner had four goal catches, senior Benny Friedman had two, and Annemarie and sophomore Jaden Shapiro each had one scoring throw and one goal catch.

The Reserve team also scored the final two goals to win 11-10, and also scored the final goal on a brother-to-brother connection, with Junior Blake Wickstrom throwing the game-winner to junior Abe Wickstrom.  Abe had one scoring throw and five goal catches on the day, while Blake had two and two.  Freshman Arthur Cilley had five scoring throws, sophomore Max Brady had one scoring throw and three goal catches, and junior Michael Spurling had two scoring throws and one goal catch.

The Jackrabbits are back in action next Sunday, May 4, with the varsity playing Princeton at 1 and the Reserve taking on Mason’s Reserve team at 2:45.  Both games are at the Rec Center.

The A-Team

From Bob Carter
This past Thurs and Saturday, the Boys Varsity Tennis team played in the Coaches’ Classic at Mason High School.
The Cowboys competed in the ‘A’ tier, which is the most competitive, and includes top teams from Indian Hill, Walnut Hills, Seven Hills, Mason, Kings, Sycamore, Cincinnati Country Day (CCD), and others.
Several boys made it to either the quarter-finals, semi-finals, or the finals of the back-draw competition; but the 1st Doubles Team of Nik Plattenburg and Myles Bourbon deserve a special “shout out”. Nik and Myles beat CCD in the finals to win the back-draw crown at 1st Doubles!!  An impressive feat given that the CCD tennis team is ranked first in the state for D2 schools.
The Cowboys have two home matches this week: St. X on Weds (4/30), and Indian Hill on Friday (5/2), both at the Spring Valley Bank courts. If history serves as prologue, then the match versus Indian Hill will be especially important as the winner is likely to take the CHL tennis title – so come make some noise for your varsity tennis team at this BIG home match!

The Baker's Dozen

It's a 13-0 no-hitter over Mariemont!  All three Wyoming pitchers had the opportunity to pitch in the 5-inning win Thursday.   Together, Madeline Juergens, Michaela Fetter, and Katie Lewis struck out 4 and walked one.  Wyoming batters Reagan Raymer, Olivia Munneke, Sophia Abrams and Erin Campbell all hit doubles in the first two innings. By the time the second inning was over, Wyoming lead 7-0.  With this lead, Coach Jerry Campbell shook things up and gave most of his starters a break and let the rest of the team gain experience and what a job they did!  They increased the score another 6 runs and committed no errors. Overall, the Wyoming batters had a total of 14 hits.  However, the day belonged to Sophia Abrams in her first start this season. She racked up 3 hits and 4 RBI's!  Other RBI leaders were Olivia and Erin who batted in two each.

The Undefeated

From DOBO John Brown:
The Cowboys fought to stay undefeated in the CHL today (Thursday, April 24th) at Mariemont and came out on top! Led by junior Joe Rominger on the mound, the Cowboys came out on top 6-4. Rominger pitched the complete game, improving to 3-0 on the year. On the batting side of the game, Parker Chalmers, Will Marty, Brendan Madden, and Casey Howell all had an RBI, while Tim Rice hit 2 batters in. Up next is Monday at Deer Park!

W W Wins for Wyoming

The Boys Varsity Tennis Team had a very eventful week.
On Tuesday (4/22), your Cowboys topped CHL rival Madeira 5-0, and then played and beat Elder 3-2 on Weds (4/23). This brings the varsity tennis team’s record to a league-leading 7-2 (2-0 CHL).
The team has been putting in a lot of time, effort, and work this season; and it is definitely being noticed. The weekly poll by the Ohio Tennis Coaches’ Association ranks the Cowboys at 6th in the state among D2 schools!!  Come cheer the team on during their next home match on Weds (4/30).

Wednesday was not Elder's day on the court.  Thier Varsity loss was matched point for point with a JV loss to the Cowboys as well.  Wyoming won 3-2.  Adam Behrman and Alex Sfyris won singles,  then Chris Viens/Gareth Norris won second doubles.
Thanks to Bob Carter for the report and pictures of the Varsity team.

The Streak Continues

Lisa Golden reported from the Wednesday, April 23rd Softball game.

Wyoming was slow to start against CHCA, falling behind 4-0 after 2 ½ innings, then managed to send 13 batters and scored 9 runs in the bottom of the third and followed that by sending 11 batters and scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the fourth to win the game 16-6 in 5 innings.  All nine starters reached base and scored at least once.  Ellen Koesterman went 3 for 4, scoring twice.  Sara Washienko started the third inning by reaching on an error, followed by Hailey Morgal who was walked.  Wyoming’s most consistent batter, Reagan Raymer was also walked (many think intentionally).  Ally Golden followed with a two-run single to left field.  After that, the Wyoming hitters either walked or hit the ball hard.  Only two hitters struck out.  In her first start as pitcher, Freshman Katie Lewis earned her second victory, striking out two.

It Was Close

DOBO John Brown keeps the great Baseball reports coming with his latest installment from the Wednesday, April 23rd game.

This evenings game was a defensive battle between the Wyoming Cowboys and Mariemont Warriors.  This game was the Coaches vs Cancer classic, supporting the cancer support community in the name of Jeff Hurt, former Amelia Head coach who is currently battling cancer.  Casey Howell started the game, and pitched the complete game shutout improving to 4-0 on the year. The final score was 1-0 thanks to hits by Will Marty and Casey Howell.  The Cowboys now improve 11-5 overall and 7-0 in the CHL. Up next the 24th at Mariemont.

Beating the Braves

From Lisa Golden

The Wyoming bats came back from a vacation against league rival Indian Hill on Monday to give Katie Lewis her first high school victory.  Erin Campbell had a 2-run triple then scored on a passed ball to give the Cowboys a 3-0 lead in the first.  In the second, Madeline Juergens was walked followed by single by Reagan Raymer followed by Ally Golden's RBI single.   Olivia Munneke then ground out but earned an RBI by knocking in Reagan Raymer.  By the end of the Wyoming run, the Cowboys lead 5-0 going to the bottom of the second.

MJ started the game on the mound and pitched a 1-2-3 first, but left in the bottom of the second with bases loaded, one out and the lead cut down to 5-2 - Enter Katie Lewis.  Katie's first pitch was lined to Reagan who double off the runner at third to end the threat.  Indian Hill scored two runs in third to make the score 5-4.  Sara Washienko, running for Katie who reached on an error, scored the effective game winner on a single by Olivia, her second hit and second RBI of the game.  Indian Hill responded with their fifth and last run in the bottom of the fourth.  Wyoming finished their scoring on Reagan's double (her third of the game) to score courtesy runner Sammy Campbell (her second run scored) from first.

Wyoming defense bent, but didn't break, stranding 5 runners in the last three innings.  The game ended on a spectacular diving catch by Erin Campbell with the tying run on first.  By the end of it all, Wyoming won, 7-5 in 7 innings.

Outscored in the End

Coach Crawford reported on a tough outing for the Girls Lacrosse teams on Wednesday, April 23rd.

Both JV and Varsity Girls Lax teams traveled to Indian Hill and came back to Wyoming with losses.  Madelyn Taylor scored the JV's only two goals in the contest.

The Varsity down 0-2 in the early minutes of the first half came back to tie 5-5 at the half.  But the Indian's outperformed the Cowboys in the second half as the final score was 8-10.
Goalie Emily Wadds tallied 9 saves.  Goals were scored by Adi Smith (2), Maggie Hughes (2), Becky Denson (1), Claire Crawford (1), Haley Stewart (1), and Reilly Simmons (1).  Olivia Cunningham and Grace Schneider recorded an assist each.

Next up, a varsity matchup at Miami Valley HS in Kettering on Friday April 25, game time 6:00.
