Soccer Review

Kara Pendery catches us up on the Girls Soccer post-season tear

Well, as you know by now, it's OHSAA tournament time.  First of all, I need to back up a bit and give you a quick update on round 1 and 2.  Wyoming was seeded 3rd in Division 2, which earned the Cowboys a bye in round 1.  We took on the Northwest Knights, Saturday 10/18 at home, for round 2.  Wyoming commanded that game with a victory of 5 - 0.  It was a bit ugly at times, with Northwest earning a Red and a Yellow card.  Goals scored by Kayla Hampton(2), Casey Jervier(2) and Jules Snowden.  7 minutes into the game, Kayla's shot on goal was bobbled by the keeper 10+ yards in front of the goal.  Kayla followed-up on her own shot.  We all watched as the ball slowly rolled into the net.   With 15:46 remaining in the first half, Kayla made a goal from the top of the box.  Wyoming 2 -  Northwest 0.  With 4 minutes left in the first half, Casey scored her first goal of the game.  We went into half-time up 3 - 0.  Nine minutes into the 2nd half, Jules had a nice shot from the right side of the net.  The ball looked like it was headed straight into the goalie's hands, but it sailed up near the crossbar, off the tip of the goalie's fingers and snuck in just under the crossbar.  Casey scored the final goal of the game. Casey dribbled the ball near the right side of the Knight's net.   The goalie came out  and Casey patiently waited for the right moment to tap the ball, past the goalie, and in for the score. Wyoming 5,  Northwest 0.

Round 3: Wyoming v Ross, Tuesday 10/21.  Last year Ross knocked Wyoming out of the tournament during the 3rd round.  This year, we had the pleasure of returning the favor.  The cowboys played their heart(s) out on Tuesday night.

Wyoming's first goal came off of a corner by Annabelle Steiner #12.  She placed the ball at the near post and Ross headed it away from the goal, right to Casey Jervier #20.  Casey sent a rocket into the top right corner of the net!!  The keeper never had a chance.  It was beautiful.  Unfortunately, Ross immediately answered back.  They were awarded a kick from a Wyoming penalty.   They sent the ball high up in our net....no chance of stopping that one either.

We went into half-time, tied 1 - 1.  With 31 minutes remaining in the second half, Ross' one speedy freshman, took the ball down the field and snuck it in, on the left side of our goal.  Ross 2, Wyoming 1.

With 29 minutes remaining in the game, Kayla Hampton #1 made a beautiful pass to Jules Snowden #6.  Jules dribbled the ball about 10 yards and popped it into the net.  Wyoming 2, Ross 2.

With 27 minutes remaining in the game, from the outside, Kayla Hampton placed a beauty up in the rafters by the far post for a score.  Wyoming 3,  Ross 2.  We, the parents and fans, had to hang on for the last 27 minutes watching the clock.  Both teams took several shots on goal throughout the game.  We had some scary moments, but this team won a hard fought battle.  I truly believe it takes the WHOLE team to win the game.....but I think we all need to give Olivia Munneke #0 a pat on the back for some amazing stops!  I think we should make tomorrow 'hug a keeper day'.

Wyoming 3  -  Ross 2

As a result, the women's soccer team will be returning to District Finals this year!  Our last appearance was in 2010, so congratulations to the Cowboys on this well-earned accomplishment.  The women's team will take on Indian Hill at the district finals, Saturday 10/25 @ Madeira High School.  Game time is 7pm.  Entrance fee is $6. Please don't let Indian Hill fans outnumber the Wyoming fans.  Come out and support your local soccer players!!!!

It's a great day to be a cowboy!!
