It was a beautiful, if cool, Thursday night when the Wyoming Soccer team went to challenge the Dayton Carroll team at a neutral field in Eaton, Ohio. The Carroll team was considered the home team. Along with parents they had brought a squad of cheerleaders to their side of the stands. Despite having to walk what seemed a mile to the visitors section, the parents and the students that came to watch the game were not intimidated and were ready to take the challenge of cheering to the home field stands.
In the opening minutes of the game neither team appeared to have the advantage. Both had speed and good ball control. The Carroll team had 9 seniors and were bigger and more aggressive than the scrappy Wyoming players. This may have made the difference in the game.
Wyoming came out strong and managed to avoid there pitfall of giving up goals in the first five minutes of the game. The first half was back and forth. The Wyoming team dominated in control, but the Carroll team had a few counter attacks that looked good but were handled by the Wyoming defense. The score at the half was 0/0.
The second half started like the first. The Wyoming stands were winning against the cheerleaders and parents of the Carroll team. The Carroll team was becoming more aggressive and frustrated at there inability to score against the upstarts. The referees had some controversial calls, but were keeping some control of the game.
With thirteen minutes to go Wyoming's forward (Jay Klein) took the ball past the defenders into the backend of the box and made another desperate cross in front of the goal. A mid fielder (Chris Rutter) tapped the ball into the net, as the opposing goalie stood and helplessly watched. Loud cheers erupted on the field and in the stands. The Wyoming stands could feel the energy and adrenaline, just as the team on the field did.
For the next 13 minutes mayhem ensued as the Carroll team racked up 3 yellow cards in an attempt to get the ball in the net. The last five minutes resembled a brawl in front of the Wyoming goal as Carroll fought to get the ball in and Wyoming challenged them to keep it out. In the last 30 seconds the goalie (Ethan Wayman) curled up around the ball while his teammates formed a circle to keep the opposing team away. That is how it happened.
Score 1/0 Wyoming over the favored Carroll team. The Carroll seniors were emotional at their loss, knowing they were done for their senior year. Spirits were high for the Wyoming team as they accepted the trophy for district champions, took pictures and eventually left the pitch.
Next game 10/29 (7:00pm) against Bellbrook at Monroe High School, located at 220 Yankee Road
