The girls' tennis team made a strong showing at the Division II Sectionals yesterday at Mason.
In singles, senior Stella Fischer defeated Nunn (East Clinton) 6-1, 6-0 in the first round before bowing out in the second round to Stewart (CCD) 6-1, 7-5.
Freshman Ellen Koesterman had a first round bye and then took the first set but eventually lost a hard fought match toTaylor (Indian Hill) 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Camille Wilson also had a first round bye and beat Sobransky (Madeira) in the second round (no score reported). She won a tough match in the third round by beating Thompson (Badin) 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. She ran into a buzz saw in the fourth round and lost Dahmus (CHCA) who didn't lose a game in any of her matches.
On the double side, sophomore Meredith Hennessey and freshman Maddie Boster (Wyoming) kicked things off with a first round defeat of Bauer-Copenhaver (Norwood) 6-0, 6-0. They continued their success in the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Helton-Johnson (Clinton-Massie). They finally went out in the third round to Blackburn-Blackburn (CCD) 6-2, 6-3.
Fourth seeded sophomore Ashley Berg and junior Tess Thoresen had a first round bye and then defeated M. Hernandez-Weaver (Monroe) 6-0, 6-0 in the second. They followed that up with a third round 6-1, 6-2 victory over Vanderschueren-McKenna (Indian Hill).
They will play in the Sectional semifinals and (if they win) finals on Saturday, October 9th at 9am at Mason High School. Being in the top four qualifies Ashley and Tess to advance to the Districts Thursday October 14- Saturday October 16th.
