Football defeats Madeira 34-7

The football team went into Madeira Friday night with both teams sporting 4-1 (2-0) records and the Mustangs coming off their first victory over Indian Hill since 2001 (assuming my buddy who lives in Madeira is correct about that).

However, the game did not turn out to be the close one that some were expecting. The defense went all Ravens and the Cowboys came away with a 34-7 victory.

After each team had a possession and punted to start the game, the defense set up the first score when Eric Price recovered a Madeira fumble on its second possession, giving the offense the ball at the Mustangs' 28 yard line. Two Drew Perry runs put the ball at the 5 and Tommy Campbell (yes Tommy Campbell) ran it in from there.

The next time Madeira had the ball it was Michael Travers making the play, intercepting a pass and returning it 28 yards to the Madeira 20.  Three plays later it was 4th and 5 at the Madeira 15 - time for some trickeration.  We lined up to kick a field goal and PRETENDED to have trouble getting the right personnel on the field, forcing us to call time out.  Having convinced Madeira we were going to kick a field goal, we came out of the time out and went for it - with Drew Perry picking up 14 yards for a first and goal at the one.  On the next play Drew took it in himself.

Madeira scored on a short field after our on-side kick failed and the teams went into the locker room with the Cowboys leading 14-7.

The offense put together its best drive of the night on our 2nd possession of the 2nd half.  Getting the ball at our own 15, the O marched 85 yards in 11 plays.  (Actually the drive started with a 1 yard loss so you could say they went 86 yards in 10 plays.)  The drive included Robert Gomez completing all 3 of his pass attempts, including a 24 yarder to Jonathan Tighe, a 12 yard Max Kadish run, and a 25 yard run by Drew Perry.  Drew also took it in for the score from the one.

After the teams traded punts, Max Kadish pretty much put the game out of reach, intercepting a pass and taking it to the house returning it 55 yards for a touchdown.

The final score of the night came in the fourth quarter on a 2nd and 17 from our 40, when Robert hit Chris Campbell with a 60 yard touchdown pass.

Drew Perry rushed 19 times for 151 yards and the two TD's.

The team now leads the CHL at 5-1 (3-0).  Madeira, Indian Hill & Reading are tied at 2-1 in the league.

Next up: at Deer Park, Friday at 7:30.
