Football defeats Deer Park 56-17
The football team traveled to Deer Park Friday night to face the winless Wildcats. To add to their woes, Deer Park's head coach had been suspended before the game (story here). Despite all that, I thought the Deer Park players represented themselves well, hanging with a clearly superior Wyoming team into the third quarter.
We took the opening kickoff and marched 74 yards for a touchdown, with Drew Perry taking it in from the 7. Before Drew's TD on 3rd on 7, we only faced two third downs - 3rd & 1, and 3rd & 3.
Deer Park started its first drive at the 30, and punted from there three plays later.
However, the rest of the half did not follow the script from the first two drives. We turned the ball over on our next two possessions. On the second of those Deer Park took over at our three. The defense actually pushed them back three yards on three plays and then DP kicked a field goal, making it 7-3, which is how the first quarter ended.
We fumbled the ensuing kickoff but recovered to take over at our 20. We then drove 80 yards before Drew scored his second TD of the night, this a 2 yarder. In that drive we overcame a holding penalty that negated a 65 yard run by Drew and Jonathan Tighe recovered our fumble.
Deer Park came back with a 69 yard drive, closing the gap to 14-10. Then in what I thought (incorrectly) to be a back-breaker, Phillip Schuholz took the kickoff back 84 yards for a touchdown. (I didn't see it but reports on the sideline were that Matt McCoy put at least two DP players on their backs during the run back.)
We got the ball right before halftime and a 25 yard Max Kadish run and and 15 yard Robert Gomez to Chris Campbell pass completion put the ball at DP's 26. Joe Panos attempted a 43 yard field goal and make a nice kick but it ended up being just inches short, bouncing off the cross bar.
The defense caused and recovered a DP fumble on their opening possession of the second half, setting up the offense on our 47. Drew Perry runs of 11 and 41 yards set up a one yard Tommy Campbell TD.
Deer Park still had some life in them and went 61 yards for a touchdown to close the gap to just 28-17.
That's as close as they'd get.
On the fourth play of the next drive Michael Travers ran around right end for 46 yards and a TD.
Deer Park took over after the kickoff at its 30 and punted from its15. On the fifth play of that drive Max scored a 21 yard rushing touchdown.
On its first play from scrimmage in its next possession, DP fumbled. Michael Travers picked it up and ran it back 28 yards for his second TD of the night.
The scoring was capped in the fourth by a 16 yard Will Marty to Chris Dolle TD pass. Chris broke several tackles to give Will his first varsity TD pass.
We drove deep into DP territory at the end of the game and Dawson Rogers took a knee twice to end the game.
The defense held DP to just 10 first downs and 197 total yards. They also turned them over twice, turning one into a defensive TD. That is the second week in a row for a defensive TD.
Drew Perry gained 151 yards on 20 carries. His last four games have been 145, 157, 151 and 151 yards and he's at 774 yards for the season. Nice job Drew AND the O-line:
LT - Matt McCoy
LG - Anthony Harris
C - Peter Kraner
RG - Larson Graham
RT - Terry Davis
Next up: senior night (last regular season home game) next Friday vs. Finneytown at 7:30.
