Strokes for Sports

If you follow any coach on Twitter chances are you already know all the cliche sayings about the life lessons and character development type of benefits of sports.  But there's another result of playing sports you may not have thought of.  Did you know that in April you will have the opportunity to play one sport that will benefit all the other Cowboy sports that you love?  Be a part of the 1st Annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic Golf Outing at Wetherington Golf and Country Club on April 20th, 2015.  Sign up yourself or get your foursome together, or just come to the Awards Banquet and pretend you played.  There are also opportunities to sponsor the event.

Cowboys Saddle the Mustangs

Bryn Lewis reported from the Tuesday, January 27th Boys Basketball game against Madeira.

Wyoming won the tip but scoring started slow until Hudson Rogers got a putback and an And 1, 3-2 Wyoming. Half a minute later and Lonnie Grayson had a second effort 2, 5-3. A minute later, Walker Lewis got 2, 7-5, To my eye, Madeira and Wyoming play a similar type of game - stout defense and an smart offense.  Three minute went by before Mason Rogers was fouled and brought the score to 8-7. Just thirty seconds later, Mason grabbed a D rebound, went full court and laid it in, 10-7. And then with just seconds to go in the quarter, one of my favorite plays of the game, Lonnie, at the top of the key, passed deep inside to Mason who flipped it out to Garyn Prater in the corner for a sweet 3. 13-11 at the end of the 1st quarter.

To start the the 2nd qtr., Garyn grabbed a D rebound and soon after Mason got a lay-up, 15-11. Just over two minutes in, Walker got a putback, 17-14. After the Cowboys denied the Mustangs an opportunity, Walker dished to Hudson inside for 2, 19-14.  At the 5:42 mark, Lonnie stole the ball and drove full court for a lay-up, 21-14.  Just over four minutes in, Lonnie was fouled, 23-17. At the 3:06 mark, Walker stole the ball under the Cowboys basket and dished to Mason for an easy 2 plus 1, 26-17.  Just under two minutes left in the half (and my 2nd favorite play), Lonnie lasered it inside to Mason who shot it to a wide open Walker outside for a 3, 29-20.  Soon after, Nate Lowe grabbed a big D rebound.  At the 1:10 mark, Hudson denied a Mustang shot and grabbed the possession. With 17 seconds to go, Lonnie was blocked in the bonus and brought the score to 30-20 to end the half.

The 3rd qtr. started slow. Hudson had a nice D rebound at just over a minute in and, on the ensuing possession, Walker found himself wide open at the top of the key for a 3, 33-22. Thirty seconds later, Walker dropped in a 2, 35-24.  Garyn snatched another big D rebound, passed to Lonnie who brought it up and to Mason who was fouled, 36-24.  My note at this point says,"Madeira not getting looks" but they found some soon after. At the 2:05 mark, Jake inbounded to Mason under the basket for a quick 2, 38-30.  And then, with just seconds to go in the quarter, Jake passed to Mason for 2 and the quarter ended 40-31.

The 4th quarter got off fast with Mason passing to an open Jake for 3, 43-31. Less than a minute later, Mason to an open Garyn for 3, 46-34. At the 6:34 mark, Jake blocked an attempt a grabbed the possession. Lonnie was fouled, 47-34. Walker had 3 fouls and had been sitting out but just seconds back into the game, at 5:15 left in the game, Mason inside found him open outside at the top of the key for 3, 50-34. A minute later, Walker inside/out to Lonnie for a long 3, 53-34. About three and a half left, Mason was fouled shooting, 55-38. Just over three minutes left, Lonnie to an open Garyn for 3, 58-40. Later, Garyn was fouled, Walker had a D rebound and had a 2, 61-42.  The Cowboy Crazies were loud the whole night but erupted with just under a minute left when Devon Davis and Andrew Marty came in and the Devon immediately grabbed a D rebound, bringing the Cowboys rebound ratio over the Mustangs to 32 to 12    Final 61-42 Wyoming.
Thanks to the team.
Without them, our great contributors wouldn't have much else to do.  Let's give 'em a cheer!

Senior Night Swimming

Tuesday, January 27th was Senior Night at the Cowboys' final swim meet of the regular season.  They hosted Indian Hill at the Powel Crosley, Jr. YMCA Shark Tank.  The Girls won 348 to 190, and the Boys won 208 to 76.  Don't let the blowout scores fool you, there was plenty of split-second-that-was-exciting-but-gee-whiz-who-touched-first finishes to keep you on the edge of your seat the whole way through.

Count Your Blessings

Sometimes, living in the thick fog of a blessed life here in Wyoming, it can be hard to see or imagine that life isn't all Starbucks and Skyline.  Sometimes right next door, the obstacles are more daunting than trying to find an outlet to charge your iPhone at school.  For a glimpse at adversity right here in the CHL and the athlete who put in a headlock, check HERE for Adam Braun's article at Cincinnati.com

Stingers Can't Touch the Cowboys

Cowboys Combined to Conquer

Saturday, January 25th, the Cowboys Swim teams were in the water at PCY.  The Girls swam against Finneytown and Winton Woods, while the Boys swam against St. X.  The Girls won easily, while the Boys couldn't quite get past St. X.  If you do the math, the Cowboys come out on top in the Combined Score compared to St. X+Finneytown+Winton Woods.

Riot Against Reading

Bryn Lewis reported for the Boys Basketball team and the Friday, January 23rd game against Reading.

Wyoming won the tip but Reading scored the first points. At the 6:40 mark, Walker Lewis was fouled and tied it at 2-2.  Just under five minutes and Lonnie Grayson shot a runner in the paint to tie it again at 4-4.  At the 3:12 mark, Mason Rogers fought for a rebound and was fouled on the put-back attempt and Wyoming took the lead for the first time 6-4. Garyn Prater had an open 3 soon after and brought the score to 9-4. Hudson Rogers and Jake Edmonds both had steals in the next minute or so but the Blue Devils brought the score within 1 until, with a minute left, Lonnie hit a 3 from the top of the key, 12-8. Defense was working hard and with 5 seconds to go, Nate Lowe took a charge and with almost no seconds left, Lonnie launched a 3 to end the quarter 15-8 Wyoming.

The 2nd quarter scoring got started with a Garyn steal and a full court break by Mason for a lay-up, 17-8.  About two and a half minutes in, Mason drove into the lane and dished to Walker outside for 2, 19-8. At 4:22 left, Lonnie had a D rebound and took it full court for a 2, 21-8. Twenty seconds later, Lonnie grabbed another D rebound which led to a Walker put-back, 23-8. At 2:30 left, Nate to Garyn for an open 3, 26-10.  Moments later, Garyn got air for a strong D rebound. At this point in the first half, the Cowboys hadn't missed many open shots and it was capped off, with just three seconds to go, when Lonnie passed to Nate who banked in another 3.  First half final 29-12.

The 3rd qtr. scoring started slow and the Cowboys called a time-out after the Blue Devils scored a quick 4 points. Soon after, Lonnie rose above the crowd for a big D rebound and, seconds later on the possession  Garyn had a laser pass inside to Mason, 31-16. At the 6 minute mark, Walker leaped for a D rainbow pass and changed possession. A half minute later Lonnie dished to Walker for a score of 33-18. Three minutes into the Qtr. and Walker had another 2 and seconds later Lonnie stole the dribble at half court, 35-18. With 3:30 left, Lonnie dished to Hudson inside for 2, 37-22.   Nate jumped for a D rebound tip to Hudson and, on the next trip down the D lane, Hudson grabbed another rebound but Reading was on a little run. With a minute to go, Hudson passed to Walker in traffic, 39-29.  With 5 seconds to go, Lonnie was fouled and Hudson grabbed a steal with a second to go. 41-29.

4th quarter and very quickly Lonnie had another steal and passed to Jake for 2, 43-29.  Walker snatched a D rebound. 30 seconds into the qtr., both teams were in the bonus. At the 6:34 mark, Jake went full court after a rebound and dished to Walker, 45-31.  The Blue Devils weren't going away and made a run.  Lonnie was fouled a number of times and with just two minutes to go the score was 49-42. Cowboy defense kicked it up a notch and near the one minute mark, Mason inbounded a 3/4 court pass to Lonnie who was fouled, 51-42.  Walker was fouled, Lonnie was fouled and Walker was fouled again.

Final 56-43
The team is still a perfect 7-0 in the CHL and have two league games this week, including away at the CHL's 3rd place Finneytown on Friday, January 30th.

Excitement Against Reading

All tied up with 10.5 seconds to play.  Oh my, who will win?  The Cowboys of course.  We all know that, what we don't know are the details.  These stars came through in the clutch, now it's only fair that you do the same.  The team needs someone to send in reports to bring their heroics to light.  At least Arch Cunningham was on hand and caught the action from the Girls Basketball team's 34-32 win over Reading on Wednesday, January 21st.  Send reports to wyoroundup@gmail.com
Thanks to Arch Cunningham for the great pictures.
