Wyoming Men Swim Strong
Wyoming Men's Swimming & Diving were named District Runner-Up at the Southwest Ohio District Swim Meet on Friday. Southwest Ohio has the title of the fastest district in Ohio and Friday was no different. Ten of eleven races had a new district record set by the champion.
One of these new records was by Jonathan Rutter who not only set a new District record, his time of 57.04 was also a new WHS team record. Jonathan Profitt, the prior record holder was the state champion when he set the record, so big things may be in store for Jonathan next week at the State Meet. Rutter was also 2nd in the 200 IM, making him an automatic qualifier in that event as well. The Wyoming Men were rested for this meet and their hard work throughout the season came through with personal best swims for all our swimmers. Injuries and illness could not make them slow, and many of our athletes made it to the awards podium. Stephen Barrett made it to the podium twice - he was 6th in the 500 Free and 8th in the 200 Free. Max Chou finished 4th in the 100 Fly and 11th in the 100 Back. His fly qualified him for the YMCA National championship in April. Matthew Lethander finished 7th in 100 Breast and also earned a YMCA National trip as well as finishing 10th in the 100 Free. Brennan Burt earned a trip to the awards podium in the 100 Breast (8th) and was 10th in the 100 Fly. Christopher Rutter who was battling the New Zealand Flu (or some such illness) was a little off his game, but still managed to finish 9th in the 100 Breast and 11th in the 200 IM. He was also able to swim fast in the relays. Carson Skidmore swam some personal best times and looked smooth in the 500 Free (13th) and 200 Free (17th). Ian Nyberg had a good showing with a 13th in the 200 IM and 16th in the 100 Fly. Sean Gray dropped time and looked good in the 200 IM (17th) and 100 Back (18th). All three relays dropped time and will qualify for the State Competition. The 400 Free Relay (Barrett, Chou, Lethander, J. Rutter) received a silver medal. We are still waiting for the official word on the State Qualifiers, but the word on the street is that we will have seven men making the snowy trip up to Canton - Jonathan and Christopher Rutter, Stephen Barrett, Max Chou, Matthew Lethander, Brennan Burt and Ian Nyberg. Wyoming Women Swim Personal Bests
The Wyoming Women' Swimming and Diving Team finished their season at the Southwest Ohio District Championship today. The Southwest District is known as the fastest District in the State and the women's competition was fierce.
Caroline Duke was the lone Wyoming swimmer to earn any hardware today. Even though she was battling illness, she achieved two personal best times and placed 8th in the 200 Free and 11th in the 100 Fly. Cambray Smith dropped 10 seconds in a great 500 free swim to receive 16th place. Teammate Daria Oberholzer placed 20th in the 200 IM and Sara Washienko made her District debut with two strong swims in the 100 Free (23) and 50 free (24). Vera Bostwick competed in the diving portion of the championship on Monday and placed 15th. The 400 Free Relay made up of Caroline Duke, Camille Wilson, Ally Golden and Sara Washienko dropped almost 5 seconds and placed 9th which unfortunately landed it just outside state contention. The 200 Medley Relay (Ally Golden, Daria Oberholzer, Caroline Duke and Sara Washienko) also dropped time; about 5 seconds to finish 13th. The majority of our State Team graduated last year, so this year was one of re-building. Throughout the season, we saw our swimmers continually improve and next year the Wyoming women will be back at the State competition. For full meet results available here. |
