This week saw the lady Cowboys varsity basketball team notch three more wins in their normal manner...defense, rebounding, and a patient balanced scoring attack. The week started at The Stable against a very athletic Turpin team. The Wyoming band provided a little extra boost and atmosphere that would prove to be too much for the visiting Spartans to handle. Ashli Oneal continued to scorch teams dropping 25 from inside, outside, and anywhere on the court.
Thursday night the team traveled to NCH to face the 10-3 Trojans. The atmosphere inside the gym was loud with the band, dance team, and cheerleaders all trying to will the Trojans to the upset. The Trojans came out on fire led by a freshman who scored 14 of the 18 first quarter points to take an 18-11 lead. That would be the best part of the game for NCH...and the frosh who finished with 16 for the game. Emily Wadds (17) and Ashli Oneal (21) took over from that point...but they didn't do it with offense alone. Wadds (22) and Hailey Stewart (13) decided to give NCH one shot at the basket and collect a high percentage of the games rebounds. Senior Natalie Burchard was her normal energetic self...reeking havoc on the defensive end of the floor, and pushing the pace on offense. The Wyoming onslaught caused the NCH scoreboard to malfunction throughout the game, but the final was another Win for the Cowboys 50-44 (despite what you may read elsewhere). The Wyoming D held Turpin and NCH under their season scoring average by 4 and 13 respectively.
Saturday the Cowboys traveled to play an outmatched Finneytown squad. The total team effort theme continued as Wadds (14), Hailey Stewart (9), Ashli (9), Marta Stewart (7), Kayla Hampton (6), and Olivia Cunningham (3) all contributed to the scoring. The game was never in doubt as the Cowboys scored the first nine points en route to a 48-26 Win.
The 13-1 Cowboys return to the court with two huge CHL games at The Stable this week. They take on Taylor on Wednesday, and look to avenge their only loss of the year on Saturday at 1:30 vs Indian Hill.
Thanks to Jody Hampton for the great review.
