Defense, Rebounding, and a halftime pep talk were the keys to victory for the Cowboys. That cold breeze you felt during the game was Indian Hill’s shooting. Wyoming held IH to 23% shooting for the game, compared to 42% for the Cowboys. The hot hand for the Cowboys was Marta Stewart who had a double-double with 11 boards and a career high 12 points…to go along with 3 blocks. Ashli O’neal continued her hot streak by dropping in 20 points, including two 3-pointers…to go along with 9 more steals. Early foul trouble proved to be no problem for Emily Wadds as she contributed 10 points to the victory…and a few grey hairs for coach Lackey as he juggled the first half matchups.
An ugly first half filled with turnovers ended with the Cowboys clinging to a 17-15 lead. Coach Lackey must have found the magic mojo for the team during his halftime pep talk. Wyoming scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to take a commanding 28-15 lead. A couple of late fourth quarter 3 balls for IH kept them in the game, but it wouldn’t be enough. Haley Stewart and Ashli O’neal sunk free throws down the stretch to seal the 47-39 Wyoming victory. The win moves the Cowboys to 15-1 (10-1 in CHL) and #2 in the Enquirer Coaches Poll.
Wyoming plays Mariemont (13-5, 8-2 in CHL, #7 Enquirer Coaches poll) at home on Wednesday at 7:30 in a game that could decide the CHL Championship. Wyoming has invited all youth basketball players to attend the game. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive a Wyoming Spirit Towel. Let’s fill the gym.
Make sure you come out tonight, Wednesday, January 29th, to see Mariemont get kicked in the pants.
