Almost Against Princeton

Jeff Evans reported for the Girls Varsity Soccer team and their Monday, August 24th game against Princeton

Princeton girls soccer is led by first-year head coach & Wyoming High School Graduate, Rebekah Schuholz.  Schuholz was a player on the 2009 Wyoming girls soccer team, the last time the Cowboys won the Cincinnati Hills League.

The Cowboys controlled much of the possession in a scoreless first half with an organized back line anchored by Senior Defender Meredith Glover.  Many others also contributed to keeping the ball out of the defensive third.  Some of these Cowboy starters were: Junior Defender Emily Dudek, Sophomore Defender Emma Levine, and Freshman Defender Gracie Wolber.

An inspired half time talk from the 2014 Cincinnati Hills League Coach of the Year, Lauren Gruber, led to a very fast Cowboy start to the second half.  Within a half a minute, Junior Forward, Annabelle Steiner had a shot on goal deflected by a Viking defender. Just seconds later, Junior Center Midfielder, Jasmine Evans collected the ball at the front left corner of the penalty area.  With an acrobatic shot, Evans put the ball in the back of the upper center portion of the net over the out stretched hands of the Princeton keeper for a 1-0 Cowboy lead.

Moments later the Vikings were able to get the ball down the field and were awarded a corner kick.  The Vikings played the corner kick in and the ball appeared to go out of touch over the end line and then finally came to rest in the area of the Cowboy goal.  No one on the field or in the stands was very sure what happened and everyone was surprised when Princeton was initially given a goal.  After a brief review, checking the side of the net, and a conference between the officials, the goal was upheld resulting in a 1 -1 score.

After this strange unlucky event, Wyoming continued to control much of the possession, earning more corners, and attempting more shots on goal than their opponent.  However, the Vikings were able to produce a quick counter attack and made the most of their limited opportunities sending a low shot just inside the left post for a 2-1 Princeton lead.  Wyoming responded well and in the closing minutes played with feverish urgency.  With time running out, the Cowboys were unable to finish numerous shots and corners to equalize the match.

The final result was Princeton 2 and Wyoming 1.
