Girls soccer beats Madeira 2-1, is headed to State!

Wyoming High School - Regional Soccer Champions

The paper said it was only 12 seconds from the time Bonnie Grace knocked in Michelle Jolson's cross to win the Regional Championship in sudden victory overtime (OHSAA term, not mine) Saturday at Lakota East.  I'm guessing for all of us Wyoming coaches, players, and fans, it seemed a lot longer.  When the referee finally indicated that the goal was good, the celebration began.

As one would expect of a game that was decided 2-1 in overtime, it was a very even match.  There were times when it seemed the game was being played at our end of the field, but the defense led by sweeper Nikki McKee and keeper Alexa Levick held Madeira to a single goal.

Hailee Schlager scored Wyoming's first goal with 16:18 to play in the first half, giving her a goal in each of the Regional games.  Madeira's Katie Landgrebe tied the score at 1-1 about 10 minutes later.

Madeira won the coin flip and chose to take the wind in overtime, rather than the ball.  They had one good chance but the shot sailed wide of the goal.  Shortly thereafter Bonnie scored and the captains accepted the Regional Championship trophy.

Next up: Wednesday at 7 PM vs. Columbus Bexley.  This is a match-up of the No. 1 and 2 ranked teams in the state in the final OSSCA poll.  Site TBD

LOST JACKET - A "The North Face" jacket was found in the stands after the game.  If you can describe it properly you can get it back from Mr. Siler.
