Football team beats Monroe 14-7, goes to 12-0

The football team played another tough nail-biter last night, this time prevailing over Monroe 14-7 and thereby advancing to the regional finals next Friday night against Springfield Shawnee.  In the process they established Wyoming's first ever 12 win season.

After a first half that Monroe dominated with its ball control offense, the Cowboys came out after halftime down 7-0.  The offense started at its own 19 and marched straight down the field on a 10 play, 81 yard driving culminating with Kyle Seyfried running it in from the 5.

Kyle was 3-3 passing on the drive, all to Harry Meisner for a total of 23 yards.  Isiah Nearor was the workhorse, carrying 5 times for 38 yards.  The drive was also aided by a Monroe facemask penalty.

After the defense held Monroe to a three and out, the offense drove down to the Monroe 25, where it faced a fourth and 16.  Kyle dropped back to pass and then took off around left end.

He apparently gained 15.999999999999 yards, because the referee could not determine visually if it was a first down, but rather had to pull out a card to see if he could slip it between the ball and the first down marker.  Alas, he could.

No matter.  The defense came up big again and forced another three and out.

(Picture below for illustrative purposes only.  Not from actual drive.)

Jonathan Tighe's punt return gave the offense the ball at the Monroe 49.  After a penalty and run that picked up nothing, Kyle hit Evan Aleshire at about the 37 yard line (by my estimate).  Evan then broke a number of tackles and high-stepped into the end zone down the right side line.

While others celebrated, Harry Meisner conscientiously  ensured that the field was ready for the last 9:24 of action.

Monroe returned Tyler Cornelius' kick to their 30 yard line.  After a sack was nullified by a face mask penalty against us, Monroe ran the ball 12 straight times, getting down to our 14 yard line, 3rd and eight.  Incomplete pass.  On fourth and eight, it looked like they tried to run a throwback to their quarterback, but we had them well scouted and covered their QB.  The running back was tough to bring down though, and scrambled back to the right and was able to get off a pass, but Jacob Allsop was there to make a fine play and break it up in the end zone.

We weren't quite home free, as Monroe's defense held after giving up one first down.  They got the ball back at our 41 with 34 seconds on the clock.  They picked up 8 yards each on their first two plays, and then threw an incomplete pass.  Their QB then dropped back again, but Tony Davis was there to sack him and force a fumble.  Jibreel Black recovered.

Kyle took a knee. Game over.  Let the celebration begin.

And the interviews.

Kyle led all rushers with 56 yards on 18 carries, with Isiah right behind with 53 yards on 11 carries.  Kyle was 8 for 12 passing for 136 yards and the touchdown to Evan.

The most interesting thing statistically might be how the last three games have compared in terms of total plays and Cowboy possessions.  In the Indian Hill game, there were 177 total plays and we had the ball 15 times.  Against Eaton it was 151 plays and 10 possessions for us.  In this game there were just 126 total plays, and we had eight possessions, including the final, one play kneel down.
