Wyoming Ultimate Frisbee

The Wyoming Ultimate frisbee team is entering its 11th season in the Cincinnati Youth Ultimate League.  This co-ed team, which is a club sport (not an official varsity school sport), plays in the Cincinnati Ultimate High School league, which now includes almost 20 schools.

George White has coached the team since its inception and three other Wyoming residents help with the coaching duties.  Three of the coaches have gone through the national coaching accreditation process, while the fourth, Phil Roebuck, was a player at the high school who went on to captain the Ultimate team at Harvard.

Ultimate is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, combining the speed and agility of soccer with the hand-eye coordination of basketball and football. Teams of seven players seek to advance the disc up a soccer-sized field by passing and catching the disc; players may not run with the disc, but can only advance it by passing to a teammate. Goals are scored by catching the disc in the end zone. It is a non-contact sport, with constant action, as an incomplete or intercepted pass results in the defense immediately becoming the offense, with no stoppage in play. As a result, the sport also requires tremendous endurance.

Four unique aspects of the high school Ultimate team that make it a great experience:

1. The team is co-ed; each team must have five boys and two girls on the field at all times.
2. This year, for the first time, 8th graders who turn 14 by the summer may play on the high school team THIS spring, as 8th graders.
3. The cost is minimal—one $30 fee covers all player costs, and includes a free disc, team shirt, and national Ultimate Players Association (UPA) membership for every player; no other equipment required!
4. Ultimate is guided by one paramount rule--The Spirit of the Game—which in practice means players must call their own fouls and resolve any conflicts on the field, with no input from coaches or referees (there are no referees!). Players learn to value honesty and character on the field.

8th through 12th graders who may want to play on the team this spring, and/or want to learn more about the team and the Cincinnati High School Ultimate league, are welcome to come to a practice any Tuesday at Oak Park from 3:30 to 5:00.  Coach White also welcomes anyone with questions or who would like further information to contact him at gwhite15@cinci.rr.com or call him at 295-7555.  He said he is always looking for new players.

Games are Sunday afternoons from 3-5 at Sharon Woods Park, every Sunday (except Easter) through May 2, with a season ending tournament on Saturday, May 8. The Ohio state Ultimate championship tournament is May 22-23.
