Girls' Lacrosse Season Opener

The Wyoming Girls Lax team opened their 2014 season at home Saturday against the Division 1 Springboro Panthers.  Interest and excitement in girls lacrosse program in 2014 has lead to an expanded Cowboy roster and includes both JV and Varsity squads.   

The JV squad recorded a strong showing that included a very close and exciting first half with the Cowboys leading 3 - 2 at halftime highlighted by offensive control and defensive stops.   The second half remained scoreless for 7 minutes of play until the Panthers scored back-to-back goals to take the lead.  After a furious effort to recapture the lead with separate shots on goal, the Cowboys ran out of time in their push to retake the lead.   Late goals by Springboro added to the final score differential, but the final score of 8 - 3 was not indicative to the closeness of the game or the solid opening goalie performances by sophomore Claire Mellott and freshmen Grace Steiner.

The Varsity turned in a consistent defensive performance coupled with an impressive goalie showing by junior Emily Wadds (holding the Panthers to just 3 goals upon 7 saves in the second half alone) and recorded their first victory, final score 11 - 8.  Wyoming impressively dominated transition play with 12 loose ball controls, lead by sophomore Reilly Simmons (3).   Draw controls favored the Cowboys with 13, lead by sophomore Haley Stewart (6).  Offensively, a two and half minute fusillade of 5 goals near the end of the first half, along with a sixth goal scored with 12 seconds remaining, lifted Wyoming from trailing the Panthers 3 - 4 to a commanding lead of 9 - 5 at halftime.   Goals were scored by seniors Becky Denson (2), Marta Stewart (2), and Claire Crawford (1),  junior Adi Smith (2), sophomore Reilly Simmons (2), and freshmen Marielle Smith (2), with assists by Adi Smith (1), Marielle Smith (1), and junior Maggie Hughes (1).

Next up, a Tuesday night matchup with Mother of Mercy HS played at Western Hills HS, JV game time is 6:00pm and Varsity game time is 7:15pm.
