Cowfish Off the Blocks

Wyoming Cowfish mid-season update December 13, 2013
Halfway thru the Middle School Swimming & Diving season, the mighty Cowfish are sporting a 3-0 record.
The season opened on December 4 with a win over a re-building Cincinnati Country Day.  CCD typically has a team equal in size to Wyoming, but are down in numbers this year so the team score was not close.  They are very good hosts, have a nice pool, and we look forward to seeing them bounce back with more swimmers next year.

On December 9, the always strong Division I power Mason put up a fight but Wyoming prevailed with a final score of 174-88.  Some of the Mason club swimmers were not entered in our meet, so we expect them to be stronger in the championship meet in January.    Individual event winners at Mason:  two events each for Holden Jurell, Phil Brocker, Nick Denson, and Joel Englehardt; one win each for Sabrina Chu, Abigail Casada, Abi Barrett, and William Jordan.  Relay winners: Medley Relay (William Jordan, Nick Denson, Joel Englehardt, and Phil Brocker); Free Relay (Nick Denson, Becca Prangley, Briann Connock, and Phil Brocker).

The Cowfish overpowered a strong Walnut Hills team on December 12 by the score of 139-101.  Walnut Hills have a brand new pool and are new to the Middle School Swimming League this year.  They have a large team, good experienced swimmers, and provided a very well-run meet.   There were several close races, but in the end Wyoming depth was the deciding factor in a very nice team win. Individual event winners at Walnut Hillstwo events each for Phil Brocker and William Jordan; one win each for Trevor Payne, Holden Jurell, Nick Denson, and Becca Prangley.  Relay winners:  Medley Relay (Joel Englehardt, Nick Denson, Holden Jurell, Phil Brocker), Free Relay (Holden Jurell, Joel Englehardt, Nick Denson, Phil Brocker).

Remaining schedule:  Two dual meets (@ Sycamore December 18, @ Mariemont January 4), and the League Championship (@ Countryside Y January 11).    Even though Wyoming is strong this year, we will be the underdog at both Sycamore and Mariemont.   But the issue is not settled on paper, is it?  That’s why the Cowfish will show up and make them earn it (especially Mariemont).

About Wyoming Middle School Swimming & Diving
(street name: The Cowfish)

The team is comprised of 7th and 8th grade boys and girls.  No prior experience needed – the emphasis is on having some fun while learning competitive swimming.   We do keep score and play to win, but that’s part of the fun.  This year we have about 40 on the roster.  The season is very short – Late November thru mid-January.   Practice 3x week for an hour at the PCY.    If you have a sixth grader with some interest, go buy them some goggles and get them ready to join the team next year.

Thanks to Coach LeBuhn for the report.
