Coach Knickel passed on the good word about Emily Stites ('12) and her trip to the World Cross Country Championships held in Poland. He mentioned that it was a crazy difficult course and that the runners had duct tape on their shoes to keep them on in the mud.
The following Jacob Skipper was found on the William and Mary Tribe website.
William and Mary freshman Emily Stites (Wyoming, Ohio '12) finished 23rd in the world on Sunday morning, running 19:37 on a cold and snowy World Cross Country Championships course in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Stites, who was elected captain by her teammates on Friday, was the second-finishing American in the 6K junior women's race, and helped Team USA to a sixth-place team finish.
Sunday's race capped off a whirlwind few months for the Green and Gold freshman. She won the USAT&F Junior National Championship in early February to claim her spot on the world team, and was the top finishing American at the BUPA Great Edinburgh Challenge to start the new year. In November, she finished 26th at the NCAA Championships to become the Tribe's first freshman All-American, and was also named the CAA Rookie of the Year after she finished third in the conference and 10th at the region championships. Despite an abbreviated indoor track season, she still found time to smash the W&M freshman records in the mile, 3,000m, and 5,000m, the latter with the world's best time for a junior woman in 2013 (16:05.71). Through it all, she also posted one of the team's top GPAs, and was a Provost's Award winner (for having a GPA over 3.5).
With her Team USA obligations complete (for now), Stites will return to Williamsburg this week and rejoin her teammates as the spring outdoor season gets underway. W&M will compete next weekend, March 29-30, at Richmond's Fred Hardy Invitational, before hosting the 48th Annual Colonial Relays on the weekend of April 4-6 (Thursday-Saturday).
