Girls Lacrosse Launches

Coach Crawford reported from the Girls LAX scrimmage on Sunday, February 28th.

The Cowboy's played extremely well after their first week of practice as they hosted the Bruins of Ballard HS (Louisville) in their first preseason scrimmage.  Led by Freshman goalie Olivia Grady recording 6 saves +, the Cowboy's steady defense and quick transition offense continues into 2016.   Goals were scored by Reilly Simmons (3), Annabelle Steiner (2), Libby Fischer (1),  Elizabeth Hughes (1), Annie Boster (1), Ashley Moher (1), freshman Greta Warmbier (1), freshman Libby Wadds (1), and freshman Sophie Walton (1).  Draw controls were lead by R. Simmons (3) and freshman Riley Bahr (2) and freshman Sohpie Walton (2), with one each by many other Cowboys.

The diving finals are complete with Charlie finishing 9th and Illusha finishing 23rd.  The swimmers have each moved past the prelim round in at least one event and will be swimming in the finals.

The #2 seeded Cowboys defeated #4 Hughes 49-32 Monday night at Withrow HS to clinch the Sectional Championship and advance to the District Finals for the first time since 2011!

Senior point guard Ashli O'Neal, recently named the CHL and District Player of the Year, led the Cowboys with 17 points and 5 steals. Freshman Sky Thomas finished the game with 9 points and 6 big blocks, helping hold Hughes to just 8 second half points.

Wyoming plays Alter this Friday, February 26th, at 5pm at Mason High School in the District Championship game...

Wrestling Moves On

Wyoming wrestling qualified four wrestlers to the district tournament in Wilmington and placed five at the sectional tournament The following placed in the top 6:

132 Ethan Tefs: 6th Place
138 Yima Nyamor: runner-up (District Qualifier)
145 Noah Pitman: runner-up (District Qualifier)
160 Justin Shields: 3rd Place (District Qualifier)
170 Luke Kremzar: 45h Place (District Qualifier)

*The team finished 6th as a team and placed 5 out of the 8 wrestlers who participated for Wyoming this weekend.

Some milestone were reached for the Cowboys as well:
Noah Pitman earned his 37th win of the season. He tied Neal Williams with the most (all-time) as a junior.
Justin Shields tied Jordan Spore (2000 grad) and Clayton Newberry (2007 grad) with the 3rd most wins as a senior with 36. Neal Williams is second with 40 and Micah Vance had 46 wins as seniors.
Justin Shields also had 4 wins this past weekend giving him 104 wins for his career. He is now second all-time passing (101 wins) Mikey Gonzalez (2014 grad). Neal Williams is first with 148 career wins.

The Boys Basketball team fell 53-59 to Woodward in the first round of the Sectional tournament on Saturday, February 20th.

Sectional Champs

The Girls Basketball team took the shine off of New Richmond 59-16 in the second round of the post-season play on Thursday, February 18th.  They went on to defeat Hughes 49-32 on Monday, February 22nd to become the Sectional Champs!  They advance to play in the District Finals in Mason on Friday, February 26th.  The pictures here, thanks to Rod Apfelbeck, are from the New Richmond game.

Spring Scrimmage

The weather has been a little unreliable lately.  Have you been feeling a little lost and disoriented and unsure where you were on the calendar?  Don't despair.  Let Spring Sports be your guide.

Kick off the season the right way.  Dust off your outside-voice and come out to the Girls Lacrosse team's first scrimmage here at home against the Bruins of Ballard HS from Louisville, Kentucky on Sunday, February 28th beginning at 11am.

5K Fun Run

Wyoming 5K Fun Run!  MARK YOUR CALENDAR for Saturday, March 12th at 9 AM!

The Wyoming School Foundation invites you to join the excitement of the 5th Annual 5K Fun Run!  The course is in a flat residential area in the Village of Wyoming (Start/Finish: Worthington & Beech).  
The race is open to runners and walkers of all ages (grades K-4 run 2.5K).

Swimming and Diving Sectionals

The Swim and Dive teams competed in Sectional meets (Girls February 13th, Boys February 12th, Divers February 8th.) 
The Girls team won big with 495 points over second place Bishop Fenwick's 256 and CHL rival Taylor's third place 240.  The following Girls advance to the District meet: Grayce Akers, Abby Barrett, Brianna Connock, Anne Criddle, Katie Obringer, Becca Prangley, Bailey Skidmore, Elena Skidmore, Lia Thomas, and Sara Washienko.

The Boys team finished 2nd at 410 behind Seven Hill's winning 500 points.  The following boys advance to the District meet Phil Brocker, Carson Burt, Andrew Derge, Nick Denson, Will Jordan, Holden Jurell, Christopher Rutter, and Connor Williams.
Four Wyoming divers competed in the Sectional meet at Miami University on Monday, February 8th.  In the girls’ competition, Adrienne Storer placed 13th and Katy Vanatsky placed 14th out of 25 divers.  The top 24 divers move on to Districts which will be held next Monday, February 15th.

In the boys’ competition, Charlie Donnelly placed 3rd and Illusha Gerasimchuk placed 12th out of 16 divers.  Both Wyoming boys move forward to the District competition as well.

League Wrestling

Wyoming finished runner up ahead of Indian Hill in 3rd place at the league tournament on Saturday. Yima Nyamor and Justin Shields led the Cowboys by taking league titles. Justin also earned his 100th career win as a Cowboy. Noah Pitman and Luke Kremzar finished as runner-ups. Noah passed his dad (Coach Pitman) on the all-time win list and now has 83 career wins. Other places for the Cowboys were: Zach Van Fossen, Ean Casada, Max Frankel, and Ben Padnos. All 8 wrestlers wrestling placed at the league meet. The Cowboys head to the sectional tournament in Batavia on Friday and Saturday.

This Weekend in Wyoming Sports

Divers Charlie Donnelly and Ilusha Gerimshuck qualified for the state finals to be held next week in Canton.

Our wrestling team finished 2nd in the CHL championships and will start the road to the state finals on Friday in Batavia.  Sophomore Yima Nyamore (138) and senior Justin Shields (160) were both crowned CHL champs in their respective weight classes.

Girls Basketball starts sectional play on Thursday at 6pm at Withrow vs. New Richmond.  Tickets are on sale in the athletic office for $6 presale and Wyoming receives a portion of the ticket revenue.  Tickets are also available at the door for $7.

Boys Basketball

Tuesday, February 9th
JV
After Reading JV had an 18-16 lead, the Cowboys outscored them 26-6 in the second half to eventually win by 16.  (40-24 Wyoming final).  Leading scorers were Eli Cupp (12), Moe Mitchell (11) and Miles Smith (10).  Miles also led the team with 6 rebounds.

VARSITY
No contest as the Cowboys hit on 10 of their 17 3 pointers, including 5 of 7 for Lonnie Grayson, on way to his game leading 24 points.  The reserves played most of the final quarter, but no reserve hit the scoring column as an easy 72-30 win was recorded.

Saturday, February 13th
FRESHMAN

By the pictures, it looks like the Freshman fell to Indian Hill 24-12.
JV
While the JV team was just edged out 44-47 by Indian Hill.



VARSITY

CHL Champs

7th Grade Team
Report from student-athlete Meghan Lyons:

Wyoming girls finished the regular season with with a big win over Deer Park (39-2) on Monday, February 8. Scorers were Meredith Bornholdt (13), Meghan Lyons (8), Natalie Strom (6), Liana Morgal (4), Mia Hagenauer (2), Hailey Martin (2), Irene Nicholson (2), and Autumn McMichael (2). Autumn McMichael had an amazing jump shot off the dribble beating Deer Park's 2/3 defense for the final points of the game. Way to go Autumn!!

To start off the CHL tournament, the Cowboys played Madeira on Tuesday, February 9. Wyoming beat Madeira 27-23. It was a close game and very aggressive. Scorers were Meredith Bornholdt (8), Mia Hagenauer (7), Meghan Lyons (6), Natalie Strom (4) and Irene Nicholson (2).

The championship game was held on Thursday, February 11 where the Cowboys squared off with Taylor. It was a tight game in the first quarter, but then our teamwork blossomed, along with our excellent rebounding and we pulled out the win with a final score of 31-11. Each and every team member participated in the win and we are very proud of ourselves. Scorers were Mia Hagenauer (8), Meghan Lyons (6), Meredith Bornholdt (4), Brianna Lowry (4), Natalie Strom (3), Maggie Fitzpatric (2), Peggy Moore (2) and Julia Hitt (2).

We won the First Place CHL Trophy!!

The trophy is ours and we can't wait to see what's in store for next year's season. Go Wyoming!!

We want to thank our team photographer, Mrs. Strom (Natalie's Mom), for taking all the pictures during our games. We had fun seeing our pictures on Wyoming RoundUp!

We want to thank Coach Kunkel (7th Grade Coach) and Coach Whipp (8th Grade Coach) for leading us through this season with a lot of hardwork and positive words of encouragement.

Girls Bowling Advances to Districts

The Wyoming girls bowling team finished in 5th place at sectionals last Friday and earned a place at district competition!  The girls came together as a team to put up big numbers in competition.  Each girl played 3 individual games.  Following are individual series scores:

Megan Piper 424
Ellie Harbors 317
Sophia Abrams 359
Shelby Fritz 379
Hannah Peeno 408

The girls then played 6 bakers games.  Bakers games are team games where each team member bowls two frames.  After all the individual and bakers games were complete, the girls had a total pinfall of 2,667.

Track & Field practice starts in a little under a month on Monday, March 7th.  Anyone who is interested and hasn't received the season information should see Coach Glendenning ASAP for details.
