In the Blink of an Eye

If you see Rod Apfelbeck around town, give him your warmest regards and get-well wishes.  He is recovering from a mini heart attack he suffered on Friday, October 25th, after experiencing some unexpected equipment failure while taking pictures of the Senior Athletes on Senior Night.  Of course, I'm being facetious.  He didn't really have a heart attack, but a lesser photographer surely would have.
Thanks to Allison LeBuhn for organizing the event, and
Thanks to Rod Apfelbeck for the great pictures.

Thank You, and You, and You

Carole Leish wanted to thank the volunteers who served at the final home football game on Friday, October 25th.
Thank you once again to the trusty concession crew who endured the cold temperature serving on Friday night's end of the season, home varsity football game which was also Fall Sports Seniors & Parents Night.  Many of the parents served in the concession, ran out on the field with their athlete then returned to finish serving.  Thank you also to all of the volunteers who worked in the stand throughout the season.  We couldn't have done it without you!
Pictured here from left to right, back row, Chris Schneider, Scott Clark, Kelly Clark, Kathy Guggenheim, Jenny Schneider, Susie Guggenheim and Sember Meyers.  Front row, Margaret Brown and Carole Leish.  Taking the photo was Mike Deters who also helped serve and stock.  Not in photo but who also helped serve were Melissa Kadish, Misty Wheatley-Maxwell, Tara & Terry Abrams.

Thanks to Carole Leish also for keeping the well-oiled (never greasy) machine running smooth.
And thanks to Rod Apfelbeck and Mike Deters for the photos.

Running Down the Competition

Coach Glendenning sent us some great news from the Regional Cross Country race on Saturday, October 26th.

Our runners had a fantastic day at the Troy Regional as the girls had a top 10 showing and the boys qualified for their second trip to state in the past 3 seasons!

Terra Forsythe and Katie Spray highlighted the girls race as they both moved into the top 15 on the school's all performance list.  You can see the updated times on the individual records list.  Monica Unzueta and Madeleine Johnson also added career best marks as the girls finished the season with back-to-back exceptional performances at the District and Regional meets.
Led by a top 5 finish from Junior Ben Stites, the boys will return to the State Championships at National Trail Raceway next Saturday.  Tanner Anthony entered the Wyoming boys all-time top 20, leading our tightly packed 2-4 group with Max Hoffman and Ian Goertzen.  Evan Cramer, Cullen O'Brien, and Jonah Engelhardt completed our scoring.  Just over 30 points separated the top 4 teams who will all move on to Columbus from a field at Troy that included 7 teams rated in the state top 20.

Check out full results at Finish Timing.

Thanks to Coach Glendenning and the Run Wyoming blog for the report.

And figure out the car-pool plan now for the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP @ National Trail Raceway on Saturday, November 2nd at 2:15.

District CHAMPS!!

Matt Maxwell filed the following report from the Volleyball team's edge-of-your-set, down-to-the-wire, big WIN over Kenton Ridge on Saturday, October 26th.

The Cowboy volleyball team came through with a huge win on Saturday on their way to a  5-set victory over #7 ranked Kenton Ridge at Trent Arena.  After dropping 2 of the first 3 sets, the Cowboys overcame  an 18-14 deficit to win game four 25-22 and square the match at 2 games a piece.  With the season coming down to a final 15 point game, the girls came out determined not to let their season end.  After trailing 2-0 early on, the Cowboys built an 8-3 lead before Kenton Ridge attempted to rally pulling them within 3 points at 12- 9.  With momentum potentially swinging, Coach Plitt called a time-out to refocus the girls and the strategy paid-off as the team never looked back going on to win the deciding game five, 15-9! Another great team victory for the Cowboys with everyone stepping up their game to pull-out the victory.

A special shout-out to all the fans that made the trip to Kettering to support the team!! It was an electric atmosphere with all cheering and helping to lift the team through the tough points in the match.  You all truly made a difference and were a big part of the victory!! THANK YOU!!

Next up, the first round of Regionals at Wilmington High School on Thursday October 31st against #2 ranked Kettering Alter.  This is the Third consecutive year that the Cowboys will face the Knights in the first round of regionals!!  Game time is set for 7:30 and the team will once again need the cheering and support of all that can make it up to Wilmington!!  COWBOYS...YOU KNOW!!!!!

Thanks to Matt Maxwell for the report.  Stay tuned for pictures from the game.

The following is an excerpt from the Wyoming Sports Report's review of Friday, October 25th's football game against Indian Hill.

The Cowboys (7-2) winning streak continues against the crosstown rival Indian Hill (4-5), blowing out the Braves by a 40 point margin. This game was a total offensive and defensive domination by Wyoming, amassing 496 yards of total offense while only allowing one score in the 4th quarter.

Let's Head to The Polls

Besides 36 points, 6 touchdowns just might get you nominated for the WLWT Beacon Orthopaedics Primetime Performer.  That's what happened to local legend, Terrell Dailey after Friday's 46-6 squeaker against Indian Hill. Vote for Terrell as often as you can before 11:59 PM on Monday.

This Week in the TCP

This week in the Tri-County Press, there was a great article about our Girls' Tennis team and the post-season.  Pictures were Haley Thoresen and Maddie Boster.  Also in the issue, there were highlights from the Football teams recent victories against Deer Park and Mariemont.  There were also highlights and summaries of the Boys' Cross Country team taking 1st in the CHL meet, and the Girls' team taking second.  Girls' Soccer was not be left out as the win over Blanchester was mentioned, and Volleyball made the cut too, with mention of their win over Woodward.

Over-Time Heartbreak

It was difficult to read the following tear-stained text from Jen Hays's report of the Cowboy's nail-biting loss to McNick on Tuesday, October 22nd.

The Wyoming Men’s Soccer team ended their run in the tourney with a hard fought battle against McNicholas High School.  The teams were pretty evenly matched back and forth the entire game.  Cowboys came out first with a goal by Ryan Derge.  They held off McNick until the last 41 seconds of the game where they had an unfortunate foul in the box giving McNick a penalty kick.  Ethan Wayman gave it his best effort, but McNick was able to get it past him making the score 1-1, sending the game into overtime.  Sadly, the game came to and end when McNick was the first to score in OT, giving them the win.

The guys have had a great season.  Coming off a year of losing a large number of seniors, the Cowboys pulled together as a team and had a fantastic run.  It was really fun watching them play.  Can’t wait 'til next year!!
Go Cowboys!
Again, we have a lot of pictures to share as we got double-exposure from two cracker-jack photographers.
Thanks to Jen Hays for the report.

Thanks to Rod Apfelbeck and Deb Varland for the great pictures.

...And Somewhere Hearts are Light

Monday, October 21st saw the end of a great season for the Girls' Soccer team.   The Cowboy's were the first to put in a goal and were down by one at the half, 2-3 to Ross.  In the end, Ross won 2-5.     Including the post-season, the team finished 7-9-3 and took home 4th in the CHL.
We had two great photographers out on the field to catch the action.  So there are a LOT of sweet pictures that we'd like to share.
Great season, Ladies.
Thank you, Coaches.

for the great pictures.

Stites At It Again

I have to admit, there's a little bit of sibling rivalry going on at my house.  At least it's a private affair.  The Stites' sibling rivalry is occurring on a very large public stage.  Ben led his Cowboy Cross Country team to a record breaking finish at the District meet on Saturday, October 19th.  Wyoming Alumna, Emily ('12) just couldn't let little brother revel in his victory.  Oh no.  She and her 8th place finish led her William and Mary team to 8th place at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terra Haute, Indiana on the same day.  Hopefully any hard feelings will be set aside before Halloween, as this pair will be out to defend their candy collecting record.  Not that the record is in jeopardy, who could cover as much ground as quickly as these two together.

Coach Knickel did some digging for us and we have links to the RACE RESULTS
and to the RACE VIDEO (Knickel advises to be patient, it gets pretty good after the introduction)
and the POST-RACE INTERVIEW with Emily and her teammate.

Thanks to Flotrack.org for the results and video

Supplementary Soccer Shots

By now I'm sure you've heard about the heartbreaker against McNick on Tuesday, October 22nd.  Let's delay that story and think back to happier times.  Remember when the Boys handled Ross 3-1 back on Saturday, October 19th?  We have more pictures from that game and a few corny jokes that just might be the thing to help turn that frown upside down.
I know it's the post-season, but who does Varland think he's playing for?  The Globe Trotters?  There's no dribbling in soccer... well, I guess there is, but certainly not like that.
And unlike the regular season, the post-game handshake was traded in for a during-game hug.
Thanks to Deb Varland for the uplifting pictures.
