Inaugural Wyoming Legends honors Johnson, awards Heuer and Crider

Wyoming Golf Club member and long-time Wyoming resident Carol “Keenie” Johnson is slated to be inducted into the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Hall of Fame in November. The Board of Directors for Wyoming Golf Club established the Wyoming Legends event this year in recognition of Keenie’s accomplishments as well as to establish an annual tradition of recognizing the long history of golf excellence in Wyoming.

The inaugural Wyoming Legends event was held this past Saturday 9/24 @ Wyoming Golf Club. In addition to recognizing Keenie Johnson’s long, distinguished career, the Golf Club awarded two college scholarships. Wyoming Seniors Adam Crider and Carly Heuer were each awarded a scholarship based on the following criteria:

- At least 2 years of Varsity golf experience
- Academic performance
- Financial need
- A 500 word essay on what it means to be a “Wyoming Legend”

Saturday’s event was a resounding success, so much so that the Golf Club has now endowed a scholarship fund that will allow for two scholarships to be awarded each year moving forward (one for a senior boy and one for a senior girl).

Come on down!

Come on down to the stadium after the homecoming parade tomorrow night.  There's not enough time and no need to go home.

Imagine Tom Muehlenkamp instead of Jim Leish, and then imagine Jim O'Brien subbing for Tom M. this week.
The grill team will have things fired up early so you can get dinner at the concession stand and then get settled in for the ball game in time for kickoff.

JV Boys' Soccer

From Boys' Soccer Varsity Head Coach Steve Thomas:
Sometimes the accomplishments of the JV Team players and coaches get over-shadowed by the varsity. Do you know that we have one of the best JV Teams in the city? They are currently undefeated with a record of 7-0-2!

Benji Kriner and Peter McGrath have combined for 5 shut-outs. The defense has only allowed 5 goals all season while the offense has scored 22 goals. Thanks goes to JV Head Coach AJ Fitzpatrick and Assistant JV Head Coach Dr. Ralph Panos for continuing to do such a fantastic job developing players here at Wyoming year after year!

Boys' soccer comes back for exciting 4-3 win over Seven Hills

The boys' soccer team made an exciting comeback from a 3-1 halftime deficit at Seven Hills on Saturday night to secure a 4-3 victory.

Senior Brock Marshall scored the first half goal.  Sophomore Ryan Derge scored all three of the second half goals.

From Head Coach Steve Thomas:

Brock Marshall and Ryan Derge were definately the two stand-out players during this game. Brock played exceptional defense while man-marking one of the best and most dangerous players in the city for Seven Hills while Ryan Derge played his best game to date.

The thing that impressed me the most about the game was that all of the players, especially the 3 captains (Nick Kamphaus, Jason Dewitt and Cory Macke) did not give up and quit, but believed that they could come back and win and played their best second half of soccer this year.

I was never more proud to be a coach at Wyoming than I was Saturday night. It was a total team victory!
Next up: at Reading on Tuesday, JV at 5, Varsity at 7.

The final two photo galleries rescued from the computer crash are from the Talawanda game and the Indian Hill game.  Feel free to imagine that these are Seven Hills pictures if that would help prevent cognitive dissonance.

Gabby's Student Athletes of the Week

Carly Heuer - girls' golf - senior captain, three year leader in the girls varsity golf team. Medalist last week in win over Taylor. Female Winner of the inaugural Wyoming Legends College Golf Scholarship.

Seth Gold  - boys' cross country - one of our team captains and among the top runners in the CHL. His 17:10 5k at Eaton is the best DII time in the SW District this season and he has been under 18 minutes in every race this year.

Jason Miller

Jeff King, WHS '07, update

When we last checked in with Jeff King, WHS '07, he had been named a captain for the Ohio University football team.

Ohio U captains go out for coin toss - Jeff is #98.  Click for larger view.

Unfortunately he dislocated his knee cap before the season started and had to have arthroscopic knee sugery.  The good news is that he has been cleared to start playing again.

On another note, the team got new jerseys, and they taped the players reacting to the announcement.  Having waited for Jeff outside the OU locker room as other (hulking) players walked by, I have no comment about their reaction, but "squeals like little girls" is how the reaction is described online.  Jeff appears (squeal free) way toward the end of the video but it's worth watching the whole thing.  Thanks to Melissa Kadish for sending it along.
