Ultimate Frisbee Update

After winning its first two games this year, the Wyoming HS Ultimate Frisbee team (which the ghost of Jim Barre insists I point out is not a school district sponsored team), the Jackrabbits, lost to Mason, 15-10, on Sunday, 3/27, dropping to 2-1 on the season.

Sophomore Donovan Schvart led Wyoming with three scoring catches, while sophomore Khafra Flynn had four scoring throws and one goal catch.

Wyoming defeated St. Xavier/Ursaline Acadmy 17-9 the previous Sunday, paced by freshman Chloe Halsted's three scores and capped by a tremendous layout catch in the endzone by sophomore Ethan Padnos.

Wyoming's next game is Sunday, 4/3 at 4:00 on the new Rec Center field vs. Walnut Hills.

Booster Web Site

Booster president Tom Horn gave a very nice introduction to the new Booster web site at the Winter Sports Awards and Senior Night.  He rightly praised junior Clifford Ngong for his yeoman work on it.  There was one tiny thing he might have mentioned, which I, at least, didn't hear - the address.

http://wyomingboosters.org/

For those of you that weren't there to hear Tom the web site is meant to work with the blog.  The blog gives day to day updates on game results, notification and/or reminders of upcoming events, etc.  The web site will provide a location for more static information - how to become a SuperBooster or Cattleman, a page for each team, forms such as the application for a Booster scholarship and a listing of Cowboy Legends - WHS graduates who are playing in the college or pros.  Eventually it will have a listing Hall of Fame members, WHS state champs, school record holders, etc.

It's a work in progress.  The goal is to have it complete by fall.  But check it out - Clifford has made an excellent start to the project.

Scott Kaufman Named Athletic Director

I received the following from Wyoming's Public Information Officer, Mary Killen:
At the March Wyoming Board of Education meeting, Scott Kaufman was appointed as Athletic Director effective August 1, 2011, to succeed Jim Barre who retired in December. Terry Hartley has been serving as the Interim Director since that time.
“We welcome Scott into the Wyoming School family,” stated Dr. Gail Kist-Kline. “He comes to our district with 19 years of experience as an Athletic Director and teacher. He is considered one of the top athletic directors in the state of Ohio and is highly regarded by his peers. Scott clearly understands the positive impact participation in extra-curricular activities can have on student achievement and is committed to ensuring that students gain and grow from their experiences as athletes.”
He states that his mission is for every student-athlete to have the opportunity to work hard, develop both mentally and physically, and to have fun in their chosen sport. He also hopes to provide support to coaches and staff so that they have a positive effect on the development of each young man and woman.
Most recently, Kaufman served as Athletic Director in the Princeton City Schools. He holds a B.S. from Bradley University and a Masters of Education from Xavier University and previously taught Mathematics at the junior high level.

Ultimate Frisbee

I received this note from George White:
I have served as one of the coaches of the Wyoming High School Ultimate Frisbee team for 13 years—since the inception of the Youth Ultimate Cincinnati High School league in 1999. Our team has had its ups and downs in terms of numbers and results, but we are on a big upswing this year, with more than 20 team members.
Youth Ultimate Cincinnati has more than 15 participating schools in three divisions of co-ed teams, including Mason, Princeton, Lebanon, Clark Montessori, Lakota, Walnut Hills, St. Xavier/Ursaline Academy, and Moeller/Mt. Notre Dame.

Ultimate is one of the nation’s fastest growing sports. Played on a field the size of a football field with seven players per side (five boys and two girls at a time), the game features the fast-paced action of soccer combined with the hand-eye skills of football. Teams advance the disc (Frisbee) down the field by passing to a teammate, who cannot run after catching it. A goal is scored by completing a pass to a teammate in the endzone. Failure to complete a pass results in immediate turnover, with the defense becoming offense with no stoppage.in play. This non-contact sport is unique in high school in that it is co-ed AND has no referees, as the players call their own fouls and the game is governed by the overarching “Spirit of the Game” rule requiring fair play of all players.

Wyoming’s 2011 team is dominated by 9th and 10th graders, and is playing in the C division. Games are every Sunday at Oak Park or the Rec Center. Wyoming won its first game this past Sunday, 17-3 over a combo Lebanon/Clark team. The team plays its next game Sunday, 3/20, at 2:00 at Oak Park vs. St. X/UA. The public is invited.

Nikki McKee Division II Girls' Basketball State Co-Player of the Year

Nikki McKee has been selected as Co-Player of the Year for girls' basketball Division II for the state of Ohio.  She shares the honor with Chelsie Butler of Minerva (full all-state listing here.)

Nikki adds this honor to CHL Co-Player of the Year, District 16 Player of the Year and Southwest District Player of the Year.

Nikki averaged 23.8 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.0 steals, 2.3 assists and 1.0 block per game.  Full year stats can be found here.

She also outscored three of our opponents - scoring 24 points in our 45-22 win over Deer Park on January 14th, a season high 44 in our 69-35 win over Roger Bacon on January 27th, and 36 in our 55-35 win over Summit Country Day on January 31st.  She just missed a fourth, when in the December 8th game against Finneytown she scored 32 in our 57-33 win.

Lest we forget, Nikki was also All-City, first team all-CHL and first team all-Southwest District in soccer.

Note to McKee family - no promises but just to be safe you might want to set aside Wyoming's Hall of Fame weekend in 2026.

Correction - TERRY Davis gets offers

Sorry folks, apparently two football players with the first initial "T." and last name "Davis" are too much for my little pea-brain to handle.  I wrote (and have since corrected) that junior Tony Davis had received two more scholarship offers.  Of course Tony is a senior and has already signed with Ohio.  I should have said Terry Davis received the offers.  My bad.  Thanks to head football coach Jim Barre for notifying me of the mistake.  (OK - I did that one on purpose to see if you were paying attention.)

Vote for Owen

Senior Owen Dunbar is the latest Wyoming athlete to be nominated for LaRosa's MVP of the Week.
Great swimming career for Cowboys; key swimmer on 2010 Ohio state Div. II champion 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay teams; this season, on record-setting district champ and Ohio runner-up 400 freestyle relay team; CHL champ in 50 freestyle.

Just missed the cut

In a follow-on to the Enquirer article about the top 100 boys and 50 girls multi-sport stars (below), they posted an article on those who just missed the cut.  Included:
Desmond Gray, Wyoming, 1986: All-city defensive tackle who averaged 16.4 ppg as a senior and was first team all-city and second team all-district.
Mike Morrissey, Wyoming, 1970: All-city quarterback and second-team all-city as a senior basketball player, averaging 20.4 ppg. Also a standout tennis player

P.J. Pope, Wyoming, 2002: Big 33 running back who went on to Bowling Green and the NFL. Also a baseball standout.

Kevin Weybright, Wyoming, 2004: He was named Ohio Division II first team in football and basketball and set Wyoming boys’ basketball career scoring record. Went on to a standout college basketball career at Christian Brothers.
And "cinreds76" left the following comment:
Wow...no where is there a mention of Fred Jacobs of Wyoming (76). All-time state rushing record (football), track and basketball star. Went onto University of Pittsburgh and won a National Championship ('77) in the same backfield as Tony Dorsett.
John Ammerman of Wyoming, All-City in Football, and 4 year 4 letters (16 letters) in Football, Track, Basketball and Wrestling...went on to star as a middle linebacker for Tulane.

Tom Berger (76) Won the "That's My Boy" award for football (State Finals), led the Cowboys baseball team to it's first league championship in 12 years...went on to Eastern Kentucky to win the national championship in football

Wyoming places eight grads in Enquirer's Top Multi-Sports Stars list

Wyoming trailed only Moeller, with 11, and tied St. X, with eight, on the Enquirer's list of top 100 boys and 50 girls multi-sports stars.
The ground rules: To be included, a player must have excelled in at least two varsity high school sports. Our litmus test was allcity inclusion. (For example, Moeller football legend Bob Crable is considered to be the best defensive player in the city’s history. He also played baseball and some JV basketball. But since he wasn’t an allcity-caliber player at a second sport, he wasn’t considered.)

Also, we counted cross country and track as one sport. Obviously, it’s tough to compare different sports, eras and leagues. Here were some factors we considered:

• The list was constructed based on high school accomplishments, but post-graduate work also was considered. (See Rose, Peter Edward.)

• Players who won state titles got some bonus points. (See Lincoln Heights grad Greg Stemrick, who won three championships in three different sports in a span of about three months.)

• Not all honors were created equal. Being a Division I star usually carries more weight than being a Division V star. Same thing goes for league awards. (Bobby Brannen and Kyle Rudolph were the Greater Catholic League basketball players of the year three years in a row.)

• More sports are more impressive. Just because a player wasn’t all-state in any one sport, doesn’t mean he or she wasn’t great. (See Anderson grad Joe Datin, who was first team all-city in three different sports both his junior and senior year.)
Wyoming graduates on the list:

24. STEVE BELL, WYOMING, 1973: Bell, who is still the leading rebounder in state history, earned 12 varsity letters in football, basketball and track during his record-setting career. Bell was a three-time first-team all-Ohio selection (once in football, twice in basketball). As a senior, he was the Enquirer's first team all-city pick at tight end and defensive end. In basketball, he set school records for career points (1,322) and rebounds (1,374). Bell averaged 20.5 points and 17 rebounds as a senior. A first team all-city selection by both newspapers, Bell was named co-player of the year in 1972-73 by the Post-Times Star. In track, Bell set school records in the 110-yard high and 180-low hurdles. He played football at UC and later signed as a free agent with the Broncos and Packers.

27. RICHARD HALL, WYOMING, 1999: He still ranks fourth in state history for career rushing touchdowns and fifth in career rushing yards. Hall was the Ohio football player of the year in Division IV and the Ohio Coaches' Association player of the year. He was the Enquirer football player of the year as a sophomore. Hall was also all-city in basketball as a sophomore and junior. On the hardwood he was a four-year starter who tallied a school-record 1,373 points. He signed with Ohio State for football and later transferred to UC.

49. AHMED PLUMMER, WYOMING, 1995: He earned 12 varsity letters in football, basketball, baseball and track. He set five Wyoming single-season and career records in football. Plummer was first-team all-city (Division II-VI) on both offense and defense, the Enquirer Division II-IV player of the year and the state Division IV player of the year. He became a college All-American at Ohio State and was a first-round pick in the NFL draft.

80. BOB GOODRIDGE, WYOMING, 1964: Goodridge (second from right) was a four-year letterman in three sports - football, basketball and track. In basketball, he was a first-team all-city selection, averaging 13.8 points per game. In football, Goodridge was a two-way starter both as a junior (RB-DB) and as a senior (QB-DB). He was a first team all-league both seasons, captain of the MVIL Offensive Team in 1963 and a WCPO first-team all-city defensive player. He was named winner of the prestigious That’s My Boy Award in 1964. He played wide receiver at Vanderbilt and was the first player in SEC history to gain more than 1,000 yards receiving and was the SEC player of the year. He played one season with the Minnesota Vikings.

97. BILL ANDERSON, WYOMING, 1944: Not only was Anderson the captain of Anderson's football, basketball and tennis teams, he played all three sports at UC. In high school he was all-league in football and basketball and was the 1943 state doubles champion with Gordon Naugle.

99. JEFF RUSSELL, WYOMING, 1979: He earned seven varsity letters and was a three-year starter in football and baseball. He was an all-city place kicker and started as a junior in basketball. Russell was a fifth-round pick by the Reds out of high school and went on to pitch 14 seasons in the majors.
***

35. HOLLY PORTER, WYOMING, 1993: The Enquirer rated her 24th on the area's list of all-time girls' basketball players. She holds six school basketball records and finished her career with 2,133 points and 1,095 rebounds. She also was all-state in soccer.

39. MEGAN MCCABE, WYOMING, 1997: Ohio's two-time Division III player of the year in basketball, she led Wyoming to the 1996 state title and was named tournament MVP. Twice she was named USA Today honorable mention All-American, ending her career with 1,404 points and 1,052 rebounds. She also was a two-time district high jump champion, two-time state qualifier and the CHL field athlete of the year as a senior. McCabe played basketball at Ohio State.
There are two other Wyoming connections (at least that I know of).

Deb Gentile, who coached the Wyoming girls' basketball team to a state title, is #3 based on her playing days at Western Hills.

3. DEB GENTILE, WESTERN HILLS, 1970: In an era when girls' high school sports went largely unnoticed, Gentile's feats were impossible to ignore. In just three years - Western Hills was only sophomore through senior then - she earned 18 varsity letters. She was the team MVP in field hockey, volleyball (twice), basketball (three times) and softball. She also was all-city in swimming and tennis. Gentile also was a cheerleader for three years and was selected the school's best gymnast for three years. She played six sports at UC - field hockey, volleyball, basketball, bowling, tennis and softball - before embarking on a standout coaching career. She led Wyoming to a state title in girls' basketball.
Angela Barre, daughter of head football coach Bernie Barre, is 36th based on her playing days at Highlands:

36. ANGELA BARRE, HIGHLANDS, 1998: As far as varsity letters were concerned, very few (if any) local athletes can top Barre's collection. She earned 20 of them. As a senior she was named the AP state athlete of the year. Barre was all-region in softball, swimming, golf, basketball and volleyball. She was honorable mention all-state in volleyball and a six-time state qualifier in swimming. She also was an Enquirer first-team softball all-star, hitting .524 and .568 in her junior and senior seasons.

Jonathan Tighe honored at National Football Foundation Banquet

Jonthan Tighe was honored last night as one of the ten finalists in Southwest Ohio for the "That's My Boy" award.  This occurred at the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame 44th Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet held downtown at The Westin.

Family, friends and coaches were on hand to support Jonathan
Among others, Marvin Lewis was on hand to award the Coach of the Year Award and Don Treadwell, new Head Football Coach at Miami University, was the Guest Speaker.

In addition to the "That's My Boy" award, several others were given out, including the Anthony Munoz Foundation Offensive and Defensive Lineman of the Year Award.  Division winners, including Wyoming's Tommy Campbell (Division III Defensive Lineman of the Year) were honored before the banquet and attended the banquet as part of that recognition.

Side note:  Teddy Bolton feels perfectly safe as part of the high school football "chain gang", but based on the rough gang (pictured above) she was hanging out with last night, felt the need for some armament:

Trollz defeat Loose Cannons for rec championship

The Trollz, the junior girls' rec basketball team, defeated the Loose Cannons, the senior girls' team, Saturday at Evendale by the score of 49-23 for the NRBL championship.

The difference in the score can be blamed partly on the fact that the LC's were without some of their starters.

The Trollz ended their season with a perfect 12-0 record.

Team members: Katie Horn, Rachel Rodrique, Lillian Krekeler, Kate Apfelbeck, Meghan McAllister, Kathryn Policastro, Emily Hughes, Angela Reiser, Brooke Duncan, Julie King, Allee Martin, Caroline Tighe, Carly Heuer and Patty Williams

The team was coached by Tom Horn.
